Dream Dictionary – the Letter L

To dream about being in a library is symbolic of reading the Bible or even a symbol of the person’s view of the Bible, depending on the context.

We know this as the Bible is a collection of books. There are 66 books in total.

Also the word library in quite a few European languages stems from “bibli”. For example the ancient Greek word is βιβλιοθήκη (bibliothḗkē, “book-room”). This word is made up from two parts:

  • βιβλίον (biblíon, “book”)
  • θήκη (thḗkē, “box, chest”).

The Latin, then was bibliothēca (“library”), which moved into French as bibliothèque. the word for library as bibliotek is common across Scandinavian countries, with similar forms elsewhere.

Because the library is a “book room”, we can also look at the symbolism of “room/s”. People are often in a room in a dream. For example in a living room is about how you live. Kitchens are common too, as places to cook or eat – so that’s about spiritual food, the Bible too.

Sometimes there is another person in an adjacent room or another room up a passage; then there are dreams where the dreamer leaves one room to enter another. When we realize that rooms are thoughts / ideas about something, it becomes easier to see what the Holy Spirit is saying. Like much of the Bible, especially the Old Testament prophets, concrete objects often represent abstract things. We call this a Hebraism. When a person moves from one room to another in a dream it can indicate learning correctly, or slipping into a wrong understanding of something important.

Turning corners into a new room can also be about repenting of something – a change of mind and behaviour.

Going into a room and sitting on an upright chair is about salvation. One has moved to a “seated with Christ” position as in Ephesians 2:6

So, once we know that the library in the dream is the Bible, we can look at what is happening to, in or around the library to know what the Holy Spirit is saying about our attitude to His Word, or about our understanding (thoughts) or misunderstanding of the word of God, or the accuracy of the translation we are reading, etc.

In dreams the Bible can be out of doors – meaning Out of Christ, who is “the Door”. That would mean we have been taught an error by our pastors. It would be an important gospel error.

If, for example you find an old person as clerk in the library who won’t give you the book you need, then you would know either your old nature or someone else’s old nature is not giving the New Covenant to you, but the Old Covenant without Christ. All biblical dreams, like the Bible, always point to, and honour Jesus Christ.

Our prayer would then be to ask the Holy Spirit to reveal where we have misunderstood His Word. He loves to answer our prayers about our dreams. And, wonderfully, He will stay with us, giving us more dreams if we are willing to continue to ask for His help. We need to be genuine in our asking, though and not neglectful in terms of wanting to hear what He has to say. You will always find the Holy Spirit agrees with the Written Word of God – the Bible. That is, provided you have a good non-political translation. I have discovered, through my study, that the King James has a few significant translation errors due to sustained political bias from the Vulgate of Rome.
