Are we Saved or Working Out our Salvation?

July 20th 2026

And if one is “born from above”, as Jesus calls the new creating human state, and one IS “the righteousness of God” then how is it, in practical terms, that we still slip up, display pride, vanity, selfishness and other ugly behaviours? This question has a simple answer. The righteous state imputed by the Death and Resurrection Life of Christ is imputed to the core or spirit of our being. That is the power house.

Hebrews 4:12 lets us know our soul and spirit are pretty hard to tell apart. But they are two different parts of our personhood, along with the third part – the body. We can begin to understand this three-in-one personhood when we understand God’s Word. That is a key thing in enabling the understanding of the difference between soul and spirit and how it affects the mind, then the emotions, and finally, our human body.

The purpose of our journey in this life is to bring our soul, that is, our mind, using our will – into line with, and from the powerhouse of the new creation spirit within. We can’t just do it overnight. It is a transforming process. I believe it is faster than I was previously taught, but it is progressive throughout life. It happens in increments. And we need to die to self, daily. Jesus says, to take up our cross daily. It’s the only way to walk in resurrection joy.

It is our responsibility as well as our joy according to the terms and conditions written over our lives. It says this in Romans 12:2 where the word for transform is μεταμορφούμεθα (metamorphoumetha) which, is the origin of our word metamorphosis, used of a chrysalis into a butterfly. From verse one we see this is actually our worship – to make a sacrifice of all that exalts us personally as we look into the mirror of God’s Word and see how vain, how ugly, how destructive our Old Adam personality is. And as we repent of this deepest hidden flaw, and claim the cleansing blood of Christ, we are covered in blood as a corpse, spiritually speaking. We acknowledge all our natural skills, attainments and riches are really of no account, except “dung” as St Paul calls it. And from this buried “coffin”, which is our immersion in Jesus Christ, His Spirit raises us up in metamorphosis through His Word to His new life and love and we are healed in the soul.

This all happens in the spiritual realm because the spirit is always seated with Christ in that unseen realm that is all around and with us. The soul, too is in that realm, connecting us to this physical one through our physical flesh. Thus the clean-up works from the centre out, progressively healing soul and body as we age. This too, I have experienced, with much more to come.

The reason I know there is much more to come for me is because the Holy Spirit teaches us to see the difference between walking in the spirit and walking in the old soulish nature. The former is a kind of humble perfect peace without striving. The latter, where I was early this morning, is anything from an uncomfortable feeling to something worse – varying from a disconnect or lack of inner harmony to a great suffering, see James 1:2. Such a state, if we are trying to overcome the disquiet with our own efforts, can possibly be soothed somewhat by relaxing music. Or we can try to alleviate it with a chocolate bar or some other stronger indulgence, or even pain killers like alcohol. But in the final analysis, nothing will heal like Jesus.

Sadly, when the effects of the dulling of the senses wears off, we’re left with the disconnect and maybe some extra side effects. But in the end, nothing beats repentance and returning to God, to give us the refreshment that a continued walk with Jesus brings. We are designed to be glory carriers, after all. That’s what old’ Adam fell short of, Romans 3:23.

And we all, with unveiled faces, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another, just as from the Lord, who is the Spirit. 2 Corinthians 3:18

In this wonderful little video we see how this process is mirrored in the monarch butterfly:

Are you trying to “eat clean” in a world of environmental poisons and depleted soils?

What makes us sick is not so much what we put into our mouths, but what comes out of them -WORDS

In Matthew 15:1 to 20, the scribes and Pharisees were once again finding fault with Jesus and accusing Him of law breaking.  Why, they asked did He allow His disciples to eat bread without washing their hands first?

We notice Jesus doesn’t directly answer their question at first but poses one for them.

According to their law, it made people ceremonially “unclean”. It was not in the original Mosaic law. It was added by the ancient sages and Pharisees as part of the Oral Law (which later became the Mishnah).

Onlt the priests, however, had to wash their hands before performing the sacrifice. This was a type or shadow of the spiritual cleansing that Jesus would bring. Our hands are a hebraic symbol of one’s work.

Jesus responsive question was, “Why do you also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition?  For God commanded, saying, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.’  But you say, ‘Whoever says to his father or mother, “Whatever profit you might have received from me is a gift to God”— then he need not honour his father or mother.’ Thus you have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition. Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying:

These people draw near to Me with their mouth,
And honour Me with their lips,
But their heart is far from Me.
And in vain they worship Me,
Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ ”

As He so often does, Jesus is pointing to the heart attitude of these “law-keepers.”  He points out that the rules they have added to God’s real law undo the power of God’s Word in the lives of the people.

These men were supposed to be carers of the people, servant leaders. Instead, they lorded it over the people and failed to teach them God’s true law of the heart. Jesus’ phrase, “You have made the commandment of God of no effect by your tradition,” sums up their lives and purposes which are 180 degrees away from His.

Thus we see that the birds who rob God’s word in the parable of the sower, are the religious legalists, driven by evil. Matthew 13:19

Jesus then explains about what does make one “unclean” – and we know that Jesus is speaking about the soul here because humanity was still spiritually unregenerate. And we in the twenty-first century know that the health of the soul (mind, will and emotions) works its way into our bodies.

We see in ministry that unforgiveness, so often hidden in our past, and judgments of others as well as self-deprecation and plain sin, these things keep people in ill health until they are renounced with words.

So, says Jesus, it’s not what goes into the mouth that makes one unclean, and suffer for it, but what comes out of the mouth – words. Words of falsehood, selfishness, sexual impurity, judgments and vows so often against other people, particularly parents.

Jesus even alludes to defaecation in the processes of the alimentary canal. He spares no punches in spelling it out. This is a great practical help to those of us who have had decades of “gut” issues.

We can read a more precise account of the inability of food as a primary source of uncleanness in Mark 7:18 to 23, where Jesus gives a full explanation to the disciples, “Do you not perceive that whatever enters a man from outside cannot defile him,  because it does not enter his heart but his stomach, and is eliminated, thus purifying all foods?” And He said, “What comes out of a man, that defiles a man.  For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,  thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness.  All these evil things come from within and defile a man.”

It is interesting to notice that Jesus’ ministry of going “about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil,” is interspersed with the adversarial scribes and Pharisees receiving a good telling off.

So too we should “tell off” all legalism, including judgment of wrong-doers, from our minds and walk in faith as we repent of all the evil that has come out of our hearts and mouths over the years of our lives. That, in my experience, and in the Word of God, is when healing begins in the soul and on into the body.

We don’t say the ill done against us was right. It is not that. But we renounce our judgments and trust that to God. That’s faith for healing. He heals with words, and in His image, so can we.

So does it matter what we eat? Yes and no. Jesus’ words are not a license for greed. And wisdom builds her house. But all fear, fear talk and food legalism does not belong to a follower of Jesus.

Do we eat clean in this house? Certainly, whenever we can. But we don’t worry about it if we cannot. We support sustainable regenerative farming and care of the earth as well as our own bodies. But clearly, healing comes with repentance especially of things spoken and done against oneself and others.

“Life and death are in the power of the tongue.” Proverbs 18:21

And this is the promise:

“I have set before you, life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live.” Deuteronomy 30:19

The Bible Tells us the Purpose of Human Dreams

I’ve written about the Book of Job because it is an important book in connection with personal healing. In that book, Job’s friends are supposed to comfort him. Instead of that, they judge him.

But a guy called Elihu hears their conversations with the sufferer, Job, and gives him real comfort without avoiding the central issue concerning human weakness.

In his speech, Elihu brings a kind of link or introduction to the Lord’s answer to Job. As part of that Elihu explains the purpose of human dreams. That’s in Job 33:15-18. They are to keep us from pride and even from premature death. This, I have found to be so true. When I first had biblical dreams, I was still wallowing in a certain academic pride. It took thousands of biblical corrective dreams, their recording and scriptural follow-up to convince me that God gifts people for service, and academic pride was the sin He was pointing to in my life. The gift of dream interpretation was also present and tempted me with pride. But our Father can just as easily remove that gift. I must admit, I still deal with pride at times. At least I recognise it now. The worst thing about human pride is when we don’t even know we have it. And the truth is, I am not overly clever and my academic field is very narrow indeed. Often, we humans have pride in something that isn’t even real!

It is important to realise that whether through dreams or circumstances, to be humbled, is to be healed. When pride leaves, often sicknesses leave too. People who have spent a long time in churches can also be quite guilty of pride. But to operate in the false kind of pride we humans often begin with, is not a state of well-being – even if we are unaware of our own pride. Arrogance is so self-destructive. We think it is protective. Instead, it is a false mask to hide behind. It feels so liberating when we come free from pride and into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

Please note: Biblical teaching is not about avoiding health providers, or hospitals. Medical practitioners do their best to serve others and our prayers support them. Nor is biblical teaching opposed to the subjection of community to legitimate state authority. These unbiblical ideas tend towards fear and cultish exclusivism.

The healing of our souls and bodies, our relationships or land and finances is always according to the merciful will of God, our heavenly Father. He does want us well and functional. But it is not about selfish claims, greed or personal glory – when we see these things, especially in religious settings, our hearts tell us it is not of God, but a twisting of His Word. And eventually that “way” will not prosper. Psalm 2

Introduction

The need to renew our minds in line with the word of God is often taught as an important way to healing anything – people, relationships or situations. And that is valid. Yet what is needed is a realisation that the natural mind is at enmity with the new creation mind that every human has access to, if they desire it. Jesus is the Saviour of everyone according to 1 John 2:2. Many a person purporting to be a follower of Christ thinks they have renewed the mind but they’ve tried without actually silencing the old loud mind of the past. So they struggle through life. Some of these folk report dreams of being close to an annoying ‘chattering” person. The interrupting chatterer in a dream is often an old man or old woman. That, I explain, is their own old, fallen, unrenewed mind. This, I have found to be true even when the “chatterer” is presented as an entity the dreamer knows in waking life. In some dreams one is found shouting to the chatterer or other problem person to “Shut up!” in the dream. This is the Holy Spirit who lives for all of us, teaching us the truth of Romans 7:8. The natural mind is hostile or “at enmity” with the new creation holy mind God has gifted us all with. And we should live out of the new mind. When fearful thoughts, thoughts of condemnation arise, we can tell them to “shut up” indeed, as they don’t bless us.

Chapter Twenty-Three

Revelation is a Letter Containing Prophecy to Real People under Trials

This material is presented in 3 parts:

Part 2 The new heaven and earth lives within the true follower of Christ in power to bless

Across the world, in this the 21st Century, believers are beginning to understand what the apostles and earliest church fathers believed. It is a simple faith of liberty in Christ, empowered to love one’s neighbours. The empowering faith sets folk above and not beneath, to give victory over sin and sickness; to heal families and restore righteousness in our communities. And all this without laying any heavy burdens on people’s backs.

Often our western way of thinking is not a helpful pair of glasses to have on when we read the Bible. We need to think more like Jesus, a Hebrew and His followers Peter and Paul, also very much Hebrews in their writing. They use a lot of picture language to describe spiritual truth. That will help us into greater liberty.

The apostle Peter writes in his second epistle about “the last days” and the “new heaven and earth” to believers in the first century prior to 70AD. He writes with expectancy of impending judgment on ungodly men. With our non-Hebraic mindsets, we think Peter is speaking of the elements melting as the physical globe of the earth, maybe via nuclear disaster or some other modern cataclysmic event. But this is not so. Peter’s last days are not the last days before the world ends. The last days Peter speaks of were known to his readers as the end of the Old Covenant age, or “the end of the age”.

Also, their concept of heaven and the land (not the whole earth, as we will see), were limited to the promised land and the Holy Temple (originally tabernacle of Moses) in which God dwelt. When Peter speaks then, of a new heaven and earth, we see it is a realm in which righteousness dwells. It doesn’t mean this world will melt, but that the elements of the temple system were destined to be destroyed in 70AD. And this did happen. Peter uses the metaphor, “melt”. The new earth is the new creation in which ALL things have become new, immediately after the ascension and, in fulfilment of all the festivals, “those all things” moved through the Pentecost reality at the time of the Pentecost shadow, and then festivals of Trumpets, Day of Atonement then Tabernacles all followed in line – no longer as shadows – but in the fulfilment of all the law as Jesus had promised. That this happened between the cross and 70AD is now history.

We note here that tabernacles did not come into fullness until the Day of Atonement was completed. That means all are now a reality and not just depictions as shadows.

If we don’t believe that the Day of Atonement with its finality of judgment has already come, then how can we believe that we have a “tabernacle” or presence with God in Christ? We are still waiting for the fulfilment of the law.

Without this understanding, that the work of the cross is finished and the enemy has been finally judged and is in torment, as per Revelation 20:10, we will continue to live in cycles of faith and striving followed by failure until we truly believe that the Kingdoms of the earth are now subject to the Kingdom of our Christ. In other words, we will continue in sin struggles, sickness and depression in a religious way. We are not made for torment, but peace. That is the Kingdom’s atmosphere because the King Jesus reigns in our hearts. If we don’t have that peace, the King is not enthroned there yet.

If we look closely at the Greek grammar in context of what the apostles wrote, we can see how we have missed the point.

For example, in reading the New Testament, it must always be remembered that the Koine Greek word “γῆ” (ge) can mean one of two things, either “the land”, meaning Israel, or “earth”, where things are planted. The context generally gives the writer’s original intention. However, to assume earth means the whole world as in our planet is incorrect. In that case the word “kosmos” would have been used. Often, translators and even modern readers have erred in this regard and assumed meanings vastly different from the contextual intent.

The classic example is in a belief that this planet, earth, is to be annihilated in an end to “time”. Actually, there is no end of time mentioned in the Bible. “Time of the end” holds a very different meaning. It means the same as “last day”, and in many, but not all cases, “The Day of the Lord”. (The Day of the Lord in the Old Testament spoke of the ancient judgements that ancient nations, including Israel and Judah experienced).

But in the apostles’ writing, speaking of “the end”, we have to ask, “end of what?” Not the planet earth, but of the material land of promise, which was only a shadow of the Kingdom of God to come. We see this in Galatians, Peter’s epistles and the Book of Revelation.

Likewise, the old heaven was to give way to the new heaven. But that doesn’t mean heaven itself would literally “melt”. Cosmic imagery is used because it suggests the grandeur of divine retribution and justice for those who had been victims of a wicked generation. Since we know that the heaven of God’s dwelling doesn’t need renewing, we must think Hebraically to find out what the old and new heavens actually are.

This is important, because the new heaven is what the believer can operate from now.

The “old heaven” was the temple where God temporarily dwelt during the centuries of the Old Testament. The new heaven, as prophesied and promised would be in people’s hearts, transforming them into righteous humans in the perfect image of God in Christ. It’s just what most people would acknowledge today, is needed in this failing world. So the new heaven and land surpasses the old covenantal temple with its land on the outside and God within. Now the temple is within people as Jesus said, the kingdom of God is within you.

So the old heaven and new heaven contrast is of the temple made with human hands and the new creation temple in people’s hearts. The Kingdom of God, likewise is part of this same expression in that it is no longer a theocratic political nation (promised land) but the Kingdom of God is within all believers. We can carry that “land” (Galatians 4:26) within us with all its promises of health and provision to serve our communities.

Notice that the new earth never comes before the new heaven. While they come together, the heaven is always mentioned first. The reason they come together is because this speaks of the promises of God to individuals and all people. He puts a new heart within us, seating us in the (new creation) heavenly place, this enabling our promised land (ge). It is not a new heaven and physical earth, but a far greater spiritual reality with which we can affect the physical reality.

This is important, not only because we are meant to care for our environment, the earth and its various creatures and peoples, but we now, being reconciled to God our Father, have an opportunity of the dignity of being without sin governing our lives and relationships. Our old nature had a default to sin with a striving to be good. Our new creation nature is a default to righteousness with the occasional sin being taken instantly from us when we repent.

Humanity’s original mandate was to extend the Garden of Eden out into the rest of the world / earth and subdue it. The planet will not blow up and bust. As humanity learns what it means to live in Christ, the earth’s groaning will decrease because the sons of God will be manifest and exercising loving dominion over creation.

Part 7A  More of Josephus’ History Recorded, Linked to Jesus’ Prophecies in the Gospels and Revelation

Have you read Revelation 9 and wondered at its meaning. All manner of odd “interpretations” have been attempted. All sorts of unbiblical explanations have been given of these weird torturous creatures in this chapter. People have even tried to pass them off as helicopters in the post-modern age.

Yet Revelation 9 is one of the passages pointing most strongly to the events of the horrors of 66-70AD in Judea that Jesus had forewarned of. So when we read of the height of wickedness in Jerusalem, and the murder of a high priest in the temple that Josephus describes, then diligent Bible scholars, with their knowledge that Revelation is drawing imagery and truth about judgment from across scripture, will see the fulfilment recorded in Josephus’ history, “The Wars of the Jews” Book 4, chapter 9.

It is, of course, apocalyptic writing, and not a description of literal animals in verses 3 to 12. They are “animalistic” in the biblical way of human degradation. We see this when Nebuchadnezzar was reduced to an animal state in the book of Daniel.

Josephus often uses the terms, “madness” and “such madness” as he recounts the events, and as a Levite himself, his horror at the treatment and killing of the high priest in Book 4, Chapter 5, causes him to recognise this as a turning point into mayhem in Jerusalem. This is where we also see tortured people desiring death but unable to have its relief, as in Revelation 9:6.  These were mad, seditious acts of the zealots against their own countrymen and not the acts of the Romans.

When we read of priests dying in Josephus’ account, we recall that the writer was not a Christian. Josephus gives accurate historical records with no personal interest in validating the prophecies of Jesus or Messianic / apocalyptic prophecies in the Old Testament. The priests officiating in 66 to 70AD were those who had rejected Jesus Christ as the ultimate high priest and as their Saviour. They had heard the gospel in the forty years of grace. But that generation did not heed the words of Christ carried by the apostles and saints, and did not repent (Revelation 22:11 – they were given over to what they had freely chosen for themselves).

Book 4.5.3 recounts how the madness grew after the killing of the high priest in the temple:

“Now after these (the high priest, Ananas, Jesus[1] and Zacharias) were slain, the zealots and the multitude of Idumeans fell upon the people as upon a flock of profane animals and cut their throats, and for the ordinary sort, they were destroyed in what place soever they caught them, and bound them, and shut them up in prison, and put off their slaughter in hopes that some of them would turn over to their party; but not one of them would comply with their desires, but all of them preferred death before being enrolled among such wicked wretches as acted against their own country. But this refusal of theirs brought upon them terrible torments; for they were so scourged and tortured, that their bodies were not able to sustain their torments, till at length and with difficulty they had the favour to be slain.”

We see in Book 4, Chapter 9.10 the account that is symbolised in Revelation 9, by scorpions who, at the fifth trumpet of Revelation appear as locusts. The imagery is of extreme pain, a desire for death, whose relief would not come to them, just as a scorpion tortures, but does not kill. The locust imagery (of men) speaks of an attack that leaves, in the end, nothing standing. While these things happened across the months, John’s Revelation brings them in summary in a Chapter 9 Revelation pericope.

“10. And now, as soon as Simon had set his wife free, and recovered her from the zealots, he returned back to the remainders of Idumea, and driving the nation all before him from all quarters, he compelled a great number of them to retire to Jerusalem; he followed them himself also to the city, and encompassed the wall all round again; and when he lighted upon any labourers that were coming thither out of the country, he slew them. Now this Simon, who was without the wall, was a greater terror to the people than the Romans themselves, as were the zealots who were within it more heavy upon them than both of the other; and during this time did the mischievous contrivances and courage [of John] corrupt the body of the Galileans; for these Galileans had advanced this John, and made him very potent, who made them suitable requital from the authority he had obtained by their means; for he permitted them to do all things that any of them desired to do, while their inclination to plunder was insatiable, as was their zeal in searching the houses of the rich; and for the murdering of the men, and abusing of the women, it was sport to them. They also devoured what spoils they had taken, together with their blood, and indulged themselves in feminine wantonness, without any disturbance, till they were satiated therewith; while they decked their hair, and put on women’s garments, and were besmeared over with ointments; and that they might appear very comely, they had paints under their eyes, and imitated not only the ornaments, but also the lusts of women, and were guilty of such intolerable uncleanness, that they invented unlawful pleasures of that sort. And thus did they roll themselves up and down the city, as in a brothel-house, and defiled it entirely with their impure actions; nay, while their faces looked like the faces of women, they killed with their right hands; and when their gait was effeminate, they presently attacked men, and became warriors, and drew their swords from under their finely dyed cloaks, and ran everybody through whom they alighted upon. However, Simon waited for such as ran away from John, and was the more bloody of the two; and he who had escaped the tyrant within the wall was destroyed by the other that lay before the gates, so that all attempts of flying and deserting to the Romans were cut off, as to those that had a mind so to do.”

4.18.2

“….. Indeed, though they had so great an army lying round about them, they bore a siege of five months, till some of Herod’s chosen men ventured to get upon the wall, and fell into the city, as did Sosius’s centurions after them; and now they first of all seized upon what was about the temple; and upon the pouring in of the army, there was slaughter of vast multitudes everywhere, by reason of the rage the Romans were in at the length of this siege, and by reason that the Jews who were about Herod earnestly endeavoured that none of their adversaries might remain; so they were cut to pieces by great multitudes, as they were crowded together in narrow streets, and in houses, or were running away to the temple; nor was there any mercy showed either to infants, or to the aged, or to the weaker sex; insomuch that although the king sent about and desired them to spare the people, nobody could be persuaded to withhold their right hand from slaughter, but they slew people of all ages, like madmen.”

Book 5 Chapter 1 in which Josephus details the seditions in Jerusalem, the anger of Jewish tyrants in uprisings (there came three Jewish factions fighting each other in the temple) and the march of Titus again on Jerusalem after his father had gone back to Rome to defend his claim there.

“But for the present sedition one should not mistake it if he called it a sedition, begotten by another sedition, and to be like a wild beast grown mad, which for want of food from abroad, fell now upon eating its own flesh.” Josephus continues to explain his metaphor: two of the main zealot tyrants, as they went murdering, turned on each other, Eleazar being jealous of his fellow tyrant in the cause. At this stage, they had invaded the temple, where an abundance of sacrificial stuff would supply their food. Thus, the civil war continued in the temple, our historian writing, “…there were continuous sallies, made one against another, and the temple was defiled everywhere with murders.”

We recall that others were in the temple besides the assailants and so these people invited Simon, son of Giora’s in, but that only increased things with “more vehement assaults” from above. So that “in any persons who came thither with great zeal from the ends of the earth, to offer sacrifices at this celebrated place, which was esteemed holy by all mankind, fell down before their own sacrifices themselves and sprinkled that altar which was venerable among all men, both Greeks and Barbarians, with their own blood, till the dead bodies of strangers were mingled together with those of their own country, and those of prophane persons with those of the priests and the blood of all sorts of dead carcases stood in lakes in the holy courts themselves.”

The success of the Roman siege was further affected by the stores of corn being set on fire by the tyrants themselves, leading to mass starvation and cannibalism. Such madness as prevailed was indeed serving the enemy they had initially set out to be free of, Rome. But the beast (we recall from Revelation and Daniel is a political entity or empire) which unfaithful Jerusalem had ridden to kill the Christ and saints was turned now against them, and their own wickedness it was that destroyed them.

Here in Book 5 we see more of the tortures, people desiring death because of the sting of the scorpion effect of Revelation 9 for five months.

5.6.3 “….But these zealots came at last to that degree of barbarity, as not to bestow a burial either on those slain in the city, or on those that lay along the roads; but as if they had made an agreement to cancel both the laws of their country and the laws of nature, and, at the same time that they defiled men with their wicked actions, they would pollute the Divinity itself also, they left the dead bodies to putrefy under the sun; and the same punishment was allotted to such as buried any as to those that deserted, which was no other than death; while he that granted the favour of a grave to another would presently stand in need of a grave himself. To say all in a word, no other gentle passion was so entirely lost among them as mercy; for what were the greatest objects of pity did most of all irritate these wretches, and they transferred their rage from the living to those that had been slain, and from the dead to the living. Nay, the terror was so very great, that he who survived called them that were first dead happy, as being at rest already; as did those that were under torture in the prisons, declare, that, upon this comparison, those that lay unburied were the happiest.

Book 5.10.3 of the famine and inhumane wickedness of those under siege

“3. It was now a miserable case, and a sight that would justly bring tears into our eyes, how men stood as to their food, while the more powerful had more than enough, and the weaker were lamenting [for want of it.] But the famine was too hard for all other passions, and it is destructive to nothing so much as to modesty; for what was otherwise worthy of reverence was in this case despised; insomuch that children pulled the very morsels that their fathers were eating out of their very mouths, and what was still more to be pitied, so did the mothers do as to their infants; and when those that were most dear were perishing under their hands, they were not ashamed to take from them the very last drops that might preserve their lives: and while they ate after this manner, yet were they not concealed in so doing; but the seditious everywhere came upon them immediately, and snatched away from them what they had gotten from others; for when they saw any house shut up, this was to them a signal that the people within had gotten some food; whereupon they broke open the doors, and ran in, and took pieces of what they were eating almost up out of their very throats, and this by force: the old men, who held their food fast, were beaten; and if the women hid what they had within their hands, their hair was torn for so doing; nor was there any commiseration shown either to the aged or to the infants, but they lifted up children from the ground as they hung upon the morsels they had gotten, and shook them down upon the floor. But still they were more barbarously cruel to those that had prevented their coming in, and had actually swallowed down what they were going to seize upon, as if they had been unjustly defrauded of their right. They also invented terrible methods of torments to discover where any food was, and they were these to stop up the passages of the privy parts of the miserable wretches, and to drive sharp stakes up their fundaments; and a man was forced to bear what it is terrible even to hear, in order to make him confess that he had but one loaf of bread, or that he might discover a handful of barley-meal that was concealed; and this was done when these tormentors were not themselves hungry; for the thing had been less barbarous had necessity forced them to it; but this was done to keep their madness in exercise, and as making preparation of provisions for themselves for the following days. These men went also to meet those that had crept out of the city by night, as far as the Roman guards, to gather some plants and herbs that grew wild; and when those people thought they had got clear of the enemy, they snatched from them what they had brought with them, even while they had frequently entreated them, and that by calling upon the tremendous name of God, to give them back some part of what they had brought; though these would not give them the least crumb, and they were to be well contented that they were only spoiled, and not slain at the same time.”

In several places, Josephus mentions the beauty and magnificence of Jerusalem and its riches, trade etc and the lament that went up at her falling. We read of this also in Jesus’ prophecy written shortly before the war in Revelation 18. Here, Babylon is the symbolic fallen Jerusalem, receiver of the woes prophesied earlier by Jesus in Matthew 23.

Book 6.1.21

1. Thus did the miseries of Jerusalem grow worse and worse every day, and the seditious were still more irritated by the calamities they were under, even while the famine preyed upon themselves, after it had preyed upon the people. And indeed the multitude of carcasses that lay in heaps one upon another was a horrible sight, and produced a pestilential stench, which was a hinderance to those that would make sallies out of the city, and fight the enemy: but as those were to go in battle-array, who had been already used to ten thousand murders, and must tread upon those dead bodies as they marched along, so were not they terrified, nor did they pity men as they marched over them; nor did they deem this affront offered to the deceased to be any ill omen to themselves; but as they had their right hands already polluted with the murders of their own countrymen, and in that condition ran out to fight with foreigners, they seem to me to have cast a reproach upon God himself, as if he were too slow in punishing them; for the war was not now gone on with as if they had any hope of victory; for they gloried after a brutish manner in that despair of deliverance they were already in. And now the Romans, although they were greatly distressed in getting together their materials, raised their banks in one and twenty days, after they had cut down all the trees that were in the country that adjoined to the city, and that for ninety furlongs round about, as I have already related. And truly the very view itself of the country was a melancholy thing; for those places which were before adorned with trees and pleasant gardens were now become a desolate country every way, and its trees were all cut down: nor could any foreigner that had formerly seen Judea and the most beautiful suburbs of the city, and now saw it as a desert, but lament and mourn sadly at so great a change: (see Revelation 18:19 – 19:4)

Josephus also gives details elsewhere of the magnificence of the “great City” of Revelation – “ for the war had laid all the signs of beauty quite waste: nor if any one that had known the place before, had come on a sudden to it now, would he have known it again; but though he were at the city itself, yet would he have inquired for it notwithstanding.”

We read the prophecies of this destruction of vegetation in Revelation 8:7, “· The first angel blew his trumpet, and there followed hail and fire, mixed with blood, and it was thrown down on the earth, and a third of the earth was burned up, and a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.”

Book 6 Chapter 5.2 – regarding false prophecy.

“. And now the Romans, judging that it was in vain to spare what was round about the holy house, burnt all those places, as also the remains of the cloisters and the gates, two excepted; the one on the east side, and the other on the south; both which, however, they burnt afterward. They also burnt down the treasury chambers, in which was an immense quantity of money, and an immense number of garments, and other precious goods there reposited; and, to speak all in a few words, there it was that the entire riches of the Jews were heaped up together, while the rich people had there built themselves chambers [to contain such furniture]. The soldiers also came to the rest of the cloisters that were in the outer [court of the] temple, whither the women and children, and a great mixed multitude of the people, fled, in number about six thousand. But before Caesar had determined anything about these people, or given the commanders any orders relating to them, the soldiers were in such a rage, that they set that cloister on fire; by which means it came to pass that some of these were destroyed by throwing themselves down headlong, and some were burnt in the cloisters themselves. Nor did any one of them escape with his life. A false prophet 19 was the occasion of these people’s destruction, who had made a public proclamation in the city that very day, that God commanded them to get upon the temple, and that there they should receive miraculous signs of their deliverance. Now there was then a great number of false prophets suborned by the tyrants to impose on the people, who denounced this to them, that they should wait for deliverance from God; and this was in order to keep them from deserting, and that they might be buoyed up above fear and care by such hopes. Now a man that is in adversity does easily comply with such promises; for when such a seducer makes him believe that he shall be delivered from those miseries which oppress him, then it is that the patient is full of hopes of such his deliverance.”

This was followed by point 3 which reveals more about the false prophet notion and about the supernatural warning that the deceived took as a sign of their salvation from the mess they found themselves in. Recall, too that, although Josephus was a Pharisee, he was a very practical lawyer who had got himself into a convenient role as historian for the Romans in this war. He was no Christian or spiritually inclined fellow. His aim was to deal with the facts as befits an historian, although occasionally he was moved emotionally by what he was recording.

6.5.3

“ Thus were the miserable people persuaded by these deceivers, and such as belied God himself; while they did not attend nor give credit to the signs that were so evident, and did so plainly foretell their future desolation, but, like men infatuated, without either eyes to see or minds to consider, did not regard the denunciations that God made to them. Thus there was a star 20 resembling a sword, which stood over the city, and a comet, that continued a whole year. Thus also before the Jews’ rebellion, and before those commotions which preceded the war, when the people were come in great crowds to the feast of unleavened bread, on the eighth day of the month Xanthicus, 21 [Nisan,] and at the ninth hour of the night, so great a light shone round the altar and the holy house, that it appeared to be bright day time; which lasted for half an hour. This light seemed to be a good sign to the unskillful, but was so interpreted by the sacred scribes, as to portend those events that followed immediately upon it. At the same festival also, a heifer, as she was led by the high priest to be sacrificed, brought forth a lamb in the midst of the temple. Moreover, the eastern gate of the inner 22 [court of the] temple, which was of brass, and vastly heavy, and had been with difficulty shut by twenty men, and rested upon a basis armed with iron, and had bolts fastened very deep into the firm floor, which was there made of one entire stone, was seen to be opened of its own accord about the sixth hour of the night. Now those that kept watch in the temple came hereupon running to the captain of the temple, and told him of it; who then came up thither, and not without great difficulty was able to shut the gate again. This also appeared to the vulgar to be a very happy prodigy, as if God did thereby open them the gate of happiness. But the men of learning understood it, that the security of their holy house was dissolved of its own accord, and that the gate was opened for the advantage of their enemies. So these publicly declared that the signal foreshowed the desolation that was coming upon them. Besides these, a few days after that feast, on the one and twentieth day of the month Artemisius, [Jyar,] a certain prodigious and incredible phenomenon appeared: I suppose the account of it would seem to be a fable, were it not related by those that saw it, and were not the events that followed it of so considerable a nature as to deserve such signals; for, before sun-setting, chariots and troops of soldiers in their armor were seen running about among the clouds, and surrounding of cities. Moreover, at that feast which we call Pentecost, as the priests were going by night into the inner [court of the temple,] as their custom was, to perform their sacred ministrations, they said that, in the first place, they felt a quaking, and heard a great noise, and after that they heard a sound as of a great multitude, saying, “Let us remove hence.” But, what is still more terrible, there was one Jesus, the son of Ananus, a plebeian and a husbandman, who, four years before the war began, and at a time when the city was in very great peace and prosperity, came to that feast whereon it is our custom for every one to make tabernacles to God in the temple, 23 began on a sudden to cry aloud, “A voice from the east, a voice from the west, a voice from the four winds, a voice against Jerusalem and the holy house, a voice against the bridegrooms and the brides, and a voice against this whole people!” This was his cry, as he went about by day and by night, in all the lanes of the city. However, certain of the most eminent among the populace had great indignation at this dire cry of his, and took up the man, and gave him a great number of severe stripes; yet did not he either say any thing for himself, or any thing peculiar to those that chastised him, but still went on with the same words which he cried before. Hereupon our rulers, supposing, as the case proved to be, that this was a sort of divine fury in the man, brought him to the Roman procurator, where he was whipped till his bones were laid bare; yet he did not make any supplication for himself, nor shed any tears, but turning his voice to the most lamentable tone possible, at every stroke of the whip his answer was, “Woe, woe to Jerusalem!” And when Albinus [for he was then our procurator] asked him, Who he was? and whence he came? and why he uttered such words? he made no manner of reply to what he said, but still did not leave off his melancholy ditty, till Albinus took him to be a madman, and dismissed him. Now, during all the time that passed before the war began, this man did not go near any of the citizens, nor was seen by them while he said so; but he every day uttered these lamentable words, as if it were his premeditated vow, “Woe, woe to Jerusalem!” Nor did he give ill words to any of those that beat him every day, nor good words to those that gave him food; but this was his reply to all men, and indeed no other than a melancholy presage of what was to come. This cry of his was the loudest at the festivals; and he continued this ditty for seven years and five months, without growing hoarse, or being tired therewith, until the very time that he saw his presage in earnest fulfilled in our siege, when it ceased; for as he was going round upon the wall, he cried out with his utmost force, “Woe, woe to the city again, and to the people, and to the holy house!” And just as he added at the last, “Woe, woe to myself also!” there came a stone out of one of the engines, and smote him, and killed him immediately; and as he was uttering the very same presages he gave up the ghost.”

[1] This is not our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus was a common name at the time because by calculation, people knew the Messiah was expected.

SISTER

In dreams, when a sister appears she is a picture of wisdom personified. Often a sister in a dream is showing you the Holy Spirit within yourself – your newly created being as compared to your soul. This is because the Holy Spirit brings the wisdom / meaning of God’s Word to you; whereas, our soul is usually trying to bring the old nature thinking back. This is why we need to renew our mind, bringing it into line with the new creation within – as in the second scripture below. When we renew our minds, we find mental / mind healing follows because the disconnect has been eroded. Science now teaches us that this biblical truth has a physical effect on our brain neurons, eroding old harmful proteins and therefore thoughts, and replacing them with healthy ones.

Proverbs 7 ESV

My son, keep my words
    and treasure up my commandments with you;
keep my commandments and live;
    keep my teaching as the apple of your eye;
bind them on your fingers;
write them on the tablet of your heart.
Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,”
and call insight your intimate friend,
to keep you from the forbidden[a] woman,
from the adulteress[b] with her smooth words.

Romans 12:2 ESV

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

To leave our old religious Old Covenant thinking and allow the Holy Spirit to renew our minds is the spiritual worship He desires. He doesn’t require us to be in a building and follow a “service”. That is not seen as worship in the New Testament.

We ought not try to follow Paul’s directions to the Corinthians’ meetings as an idea of worship. They are seen as the most carnal ekklēsial group in the New Testament. Worship is not mentioned for their meetings. Learning certainly was mentioned as they were very much baby Christians, needing spiritual gifts to manifest because of their soulish behaviours. They weren’t living in the new creation, even though they were saved. They did not yet have “the fullness of Christ” that we are meant to have. We note that no other groups were given instructions like those given to the selfish and self-aggrandising Corinthians.

Dream Dictionary – the Letter L

Library

To dream about being in a library is symbolic of reading the Bible or even a symbol of the person’s view of the Bible, depending on the context.

We know this as the Bible because it is a collection of books. There are 66 books in total.

Also the word library in quite a few European languages stems from “bibli”. For example the ancient Greek word is βιβλιοθήκη (bibliothḗkē, “book-room”). This word is made up from two parts:

  • βιβλίον (biblíon, “book”)
  • θήκη (thḗkē, “box, chest”).

The Latin, then was bibliothēca (“library”), which moved into French as bibliothèque. the word for library as bibliotek is common across Scandinavian countries, with similar forms elsewhere.

Because the library is a “book room”, we can also look at the symbolism of “room/s”. People are often in a room in a dream. For example in a living room is about how you live. Kitchens are common too, as places to cook or eat – so that’s about spiritual food, the Bible too.

Sometimes there is another person in an adjacent room or another room up a passage; then there are dreams where the dreamer leaves one room to enter another. When we realize that rooms are thoughts / ideas about something, it becomes easier to see what the Holy Spirit is saying. Like much of the Bible, especially the Old Testament prophets, concrete objects often represent abstract things. We call this a Hebraism. When a person moves from one room to another in a dream it can indicate learning correctly, or slipping into a wrong understanding of something important.

Turning corners into a new room can also be about repenting of something – a change of mind and behaviour.

Going into a room and sitting on an upright chair is about salvation. One has moved to a “seated with Christ” position as in Ephesians 2:6

So, once we know that the library in the dream is the Bible, we can look at what is happening to, in or around the library to know what the Holy Spirit is saying about our attitude to His Word, or about our understanding (thoughts) or misunderstanding of the word of God, or the accuracy of the translation we are reading, etc.

In dreams the Bible can be out of doors – meaning Out of Christ, who is “the Door”. That would mean we have been taught an error by our pastors. It would be an important gospel error.

If, for example you find an old person as clerk in the library who won’t give you the book you need, then you would know either your old nature or someone else’s old nature is not giving the New Covenant to you, but the Old Covenant without Christ. All biblical dreams, like the Bible, always point to, and honour Jesus Christ.

Our prayer would then be to ask the Holy Spirit to reveal where we have misunderstood His Word. He loves to answer our prayers about our dreams. And, wonderfully, He will stay with us, giving us more dreams if we are willing to continue to ask for His help. We need to be genuine in our asking, though and not neglectful in terms of wanting to hear what He has to say. You will always find the Holy Spirit agrees with the Written Word of God – the Bible. That is, provided you have a good non-political translation. I have discovered, through my study, that the King James has a few significant translation errors due to sustained political bias from the Vulgate of Rome.

Part Seven Excerpts from Flavius Josephus

I will now bring a few excerpts from historian of that day, Josephus F., The Wars of the Jews.

Firstly, I refer to Matthew 24: 1 and 2[1]. Jesus and His three closest disciples had just departed the glorious temple of Jerusalem and there had been comments as to its beauty and the stones adorning it. Jesus then tells the disciples that it will be destroyed and these stones they were admiring “thrown down”.

Jesus’ disciples then ask, “Tell us when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming and the end of the age?” Jesus then answers them, not only with general time indicators, but with warnings and advice for their own safety at the “end of the age”.

We note that this “end of the age” is equated with “the sign of Your coming”. So, these three knew that history would soon change gears from the Old Covenant into the Messianic Age – the Age of the Kingdom of God, AKA, The Kingdom of Heaven. It was something they had already tasted. Now it was going to come in fulness. How it was going to happen was still beyond their minds as these were yet carnal men with large L plates on. Jesus hadn’t been to the cross at this stage.

Still, it was important, however, for them to receive sufficient information for the survival of the nascent ekklēsia which would grow over the next generation. Jesus’ concern was for their safety during the coming war. This would occur at the end of that generation of forty years. These 40 years were to be the anti-type of their shadow / type of Israelites in the wilderness. It would be a testing tme in which believers would need to stick together and encourage one another while preaching the good news. This was because they would be opposed by false Israel, aka “the bad figs” aka, “the kings and rulers” of that age (Psalm 2:2, Acts 4:23-30 and Revelation 6:15; 16:16; 17:18; 18:3,9).

One of the very early signs was given “You will hear of wars and rumours of wars.” But then Jesus explains, that such political turmoil would not yet mean the end had come.

They needed the signs, or Jesus would not have given them. They needed to know that this was the end because there was no physical manifestation that some have imagined. If it were to be a physical manifestation, as imagined, then no-one would have been able to convince the Thessalonians in the AD 50s that it had already happened. Clearly, “the end of the age” would come in “the day of the Lord” with the earthly judgment in the first instance. This is about apostate Jerusalem / Israel suffering her death as foretold in the shadow of the day of Atonement. It is about physical Israel in 70AD. She had not attended the festival provided for salvation – and death of the material nation is her penalty.[2]

One of the signs Jesus said would happen was the arising of false prophets. We read of one of those in Josephus Book 2 Chapter 10 point 5. This was early in the piece. There is another account in Book 6 Chapter 5 point 2. I will read both of these shortly. These are just two of the fulfilments of the various false prophets and false information that that occurred just as Jesus had warned in the Gospels and in Revelation.

Now the end Jesus indicated was coming after these signs, was never intended as the end of the world, nor even the “earth”. As we have explained, the word for earth and the word for “the land” as in Israel, are the same Greek word used in the Bible (ge). So, the end He is speaking of is the end of the physicality of the Kingdom of God in Israel, and the beginning of the Kingdom in human hearts (Daniel 2:44; Matthew 12:28; Luke 17:20,21; John 18:3; Romans 14:17; Colossians 1:13). This is the new heaven. If we are waiting for those cosmic signs to be literal (they are typical of symbolic literature of their day), then we are still living in physicality in the world instead of living within heaven while in the world. Big difference.

Josephus, a non-Christian, in his history The Wars of the Jews: The History of the Destruction of Jerusalem, in Point 4 of the Preface (and then in the body of Book 1 onwards) felt such emotional regret in seeing the fall of his own capital and nation, Jerusalem / Judea, along with its temple that he wrote the following even against his own stated principles of a reporting historian in not interposing his opinions or personal comment.

Archaeology has verified the authenticity of Josephus’ writing. God doesn’t leave Himself without a witness in the earth. It is providential that the set of circumstances which have given us these histories, happened for us. It is strange to me that so many of my clerical friends can have a copy of this book on their shelves without seeing the high correlation between the events described and the pericopes of Revelation.

Here, in his Preface to The War of the Jews, Josephus sincerely laments the national loss, owning to the breaking of his own principles as an historian:

“… because it had so come to pass that our city Jerusalem had arrived at a higher degree of felicity than any other city under the Roman government

(See Revelation 18:1-18),                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             and yet, at last fell into the sorest of calamities again. Accordingly, it appears to me, that the misfortune of all men, from the beginning of the world, if they be compared to these of the Jews, are not so considerable as they were, while the authors of them were not foreigners either.” In other words, the atrocities committed were by Jew upon Jew, not just by those foreign to Jews in the beginning. We note that in all the histories of wars he had studied, our historian had never seen or heard recorded – verifying Jesus words of Matthew 24:21 as pertaining to tribulation, which is elsewhere called Jacob’s trouble 66 to 70 AD.

Josephus, in his history The Wars of the Jews: The History of the Destruction of Jerusalem, in Point 2 of the Preface (and then in the body of Book 1 onwards) writes about this political upheaval in the Roman Empire which occurred around the same time as the rise of Jewish zealotry at home and in the dispersion, which impacted and was impacted by tumultuous times across the empire :

“Now at the time when this great concussion of affairs happened, the affairs of the Romans were themselves in great disorder. Those Jews also who were for innovations, then arose when the times were disturbed; they were also in a flourishing condition for strength and riches, insomuch that the affairs of the East were then exceeding tumultuous, while some hoped for gain, and others were afraid of loss in such troubles; for the Jews hoped that all of their nation which were beyond Euphrates would have raised an insurrection together with them. The Gauls also, in the neighbourhood of the Romans, were in motion, and the Geltin were not quiet; but all was in disorder after the death of Nero. And the opportunity now offered induced many to aim at the royal power; and the soldiery affected change, out of the hopes of getting money.”

Excerpt Preface page 545

“After this (I shall relate) how the Jews’ affairs had become very bad; Nero died, and Vespasian, when he was going to attack Jerusalem, was called back to take the government upon him; what signs happened to him relating to his gaining that government and then what mutations of government then happened at Rome…. (then) the affairs of the Jews became very tumultuous; as also how the tyrants rose up against them and fell into dissentions among themselves.” (civil war in Judea). Then…

“Titus marched out of Egypt unto Judea a second time” the state of Judea being sedition by this time. “What attacks he (Titus) made and how many ramparts he cast up; of the three walls that encompassed the city ….”

“After that I shall relate the barbarity of the tyrants towards the people of their own nation … I shall also distinguish the sufferings of the people, and their calamities; how far they were afflicted by the sedition, and how far by the famine, and at length were taken. Nor shall I omit to mention the misfortunes of the deserters, nor the punishments inflicted on the captives as also how the temple was burnt against the consent of Caesar; and how many sacred things that had been laid up in the temple, were snatched out of the fire; the destruction also of the entire city with the signs and wonders that went before it…and the taking of tyrants captive, and the multitude of those that were made slaves, and into which misfortunes they were everyone distributed.”

Josephus also details at various times, other parts of the empire where zealots had risen up and Jews were defeated. This sort of thing didn’t happen overnight. There had been coming wars and rumours of wars throughout the empire.

Book 2 Chapter 20.2 “The people of Damascus, when they were informed of the destruction of the Romans, set about the slaughter of those Jews that were among them and as they had them already cooped up together in the place of public exercise, which they had done out of the suspicion they had of them, they thought they should meet with no difficulty in the attempt…. So, they came upon the Jews and cut their throats, as being in a narrow place, in number ten thousand and all being unarmed, and this in one hour’s time without anybody to disturb them.”

Book 2 Chapter 10 point 5 (which I note as 2.10.5) explains one of the early instances of false prophets, but this was by no means the first. There had been many.

“But there was an Egyptian false prophet that did the Jews more mischief than the former; for he was a cheat, and pretended to be a prophet also, and got together thirty thousand men that were deluded by him; these he led round about from the wilderness to the mount which was called the Mount of Olives, and was ready to break into Jerusalem by force from that place; and if he could but once conquer the Roman garrison and the people, he intended to domineer over them by the assistance of those guards of his that were to break into the city with him. But Felix prevented his attempt, and met him with his Roman soldiers, while all the people assisted him in his attack upon them, insomuch that when it came to a battle, the Egyptian ran away, with a few others, while the greatest part of those that were with him were either destroyed or taken alive; but the rest of the multitude were dispersed every one to their own homes, and there concealed themselves.”

Book 2 Chapter 20.3

“But as to those who had pursued after Cestius, when they were returned back to Jerusalem, they overbore some of those who favoured the Romans by violence, and some they persuaded by entreaties to join them, and got together in great numbers in the temple, and appointed a great many generals for the war.”

Jesus had warned “there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of sorrows.” Matthew 24:7,8.

In Book 4 Chapter 1 Josephus details the siege of Gamala in which he speaks of “the want of food”. One can imagine the 600 of Vespasian’s Roman horsemen headed towards Mt Tabor where a great multitude of Jews had gathered during the siege, making use only of rainwater. Each side had treacherous strategies, but the Jews were beaten by the superior stratagem of Placidus, so that those who were not beaten fled towards Jerusalem.

Thus, this almost impregnable city, Gamala, which was reputed to be the home of the zealotry which sparked the wars – a well-fortified city of some 9000 men, fell to the Romans. This city and its long-hidden history were discovered by archaeologists in 1969, verifying the accuracy of Josephus’ record, for he indeed was not only there, but had been in charge of those fortifications. He was a Jewish lawyer of no small standing in Judea. Had these very people attended to the teachings of Jesus and been His faithful family, they would have known how to still the storm that brought their demise. https://www.biblewalks.com/Gamla/

Many believed the false prophets of those days. False, because the promised safety in the temple didn’t materialise. Rather the treachery from their own people, the horrors and slaughter therein, was as Jesus had predicted in Matthew 24:21.

You can see in Josephus 5.6.3 that, in the end, Josephus writes of the irony of the zealots self- fulfilling the true prophecies of God regarding this conclusion to the destruction of natural Judea / Israel.

“These men, therefore, trampled upon all the laws of men, and laughed at the laws of God; and for the oracles of the prophets, they ridiculed them as the tricks of jugglers; yet did these prophets foretell many things concerning [the rewards of] virtue, and [punishments of] vice, which when these zealots violated, they occasioned the fulfilling of those very prophecies belonging to their own country; for there was a certain ancient oracle of those men, that the city should then be taken and the sanctuary burnt, by right of war, when a sedition should invade the Jews, and their own hand should pollute the temple of God. Now while these zealots did not [quite] disbelieve these predictions, they made themselves the instruments of their accomplishment.” (from the speech by Eleazar)

No tribulation so terrible had been seen before “since the beginning of the world (kosmos)” nor was to be seen again, as in those days. The Roman Jewish War of 66 to 70AD is little spoken of in orthodox churches. Yet this “Gehenna” is the most prophesied physical reality that Jesus spoke of and the apostles pointed to in the New Testament. Without an understanding of

  • Why these things happened – for the completion of the shadow of the Day of Judgment of sin and liberty in Christ.
  • The “setting up of thrones”
  • How Jesus had wept forty years beforehand at the thought of Jerusalem in such suffering
  • And what was accomplished to fulfill the last type and shadow – the Day of Atonement.

But before we look at Part 8, where we’ll look at who the “two witnesses” are in Revelation, we can see more of the verification of NT prophecies in Josephus in Part 7A.

[1] See also Luke 21:5 and 6; Mark 13: 1 and 2.

[2] The formation of a state of Israel in 1948, fostered by global warring interests, in no way relates to any Bible prophecy. The book of Revelation does not mention a time 2000 + years hence; only events which were soon to take place. The conflicts in the middle east, as elsewhere are the product of human interest and plans, not Bible prophecy. We see from a 2012 study at John Hopkins University, that “found that the European Jewish population featured a mix of Caucasus, European, and Semitic ancestries.”[2] In that respect, they are like many other countries – mixed races today.

While the information from John Hopkins University challenges the validity of the dispensational view, it makes no difference to the value of those identifying as Jews today, as Maarschalk has stated, “To whatever degree the …information (regarding the Khazars) is true, it doesn’t make Jews today, whether they are Semitic or non-Semitic, any more or any less valuable, human, or worthy of respect. What it does likely do, however, is further confirm that key claims within Christian Zionism are false.”

Part 2 – The new heaven and earth is within the true follower of Christ in power to bless

We need to think more like Jesus, a Hebrew and His followers Peter and Paul, also very much Hebrews in their wrriting.
