In all the thousands of dreams I have recorded, only two predicted the future – in terms of events of the day following the dream. I have had predictive dreams about my new learning about the Gospel, and these were in series. But it was not so much a warning, but a correction which I did not walk in for some months, being slow to want to change a theology I had grown used to. This is not an uncommon occurrance.

Usually, when the Holy Spirit reveals the meaning of the dream, either directly or through a believer who is experienced in dream interpretation, one commonly has a sudden “Aha! as light bursts in on them with understanding. Sometimes this is at a much later date than the dream.

But the two dreams I experienced that predicted the actual detailed events in the following day, while also validating the dream ministry,  were both very different from each other. One was a serious warning. Each dream had a different purpose. They were each during the night but months apart.

The first one was a simple preview of an unusual event with a sudden unknown visitor that my husband and I witnessed in our front yard. The sequence of events had appeared as a dream the night before and I had very little idea of the meaning. When the event happened, I knew exactly how to react with the unknown person, as I had seen it in the dream and so, I just did it. As the “event” finished, my husband commented on the unusual event. I explained that I had just done what was in the dream. Up to this time, which was early in my Acts 2:17 experiences, he had been doubtful as to whether this really was the Lord speaking or just fanciful thinking.

At the close of the “event” which involved the person whom we have never seen before or since, I explained my actions to my husband – they had appeared in the dream the night before in just this way. We went inside and I pulled the Word document file up and there was the earlier documented time and date on file on my screen. In this way, my husband began to realise that my dreams may be of the Lord.

But never having had a serious predicted dream, warning of danger, I did not recognise what the Lord was saying initially when the second predictive dream came.

With this particular dream, the night before a visit to the skin specialist, I had a warning dream. I was due to attend a skin specialist for a consultation about a deep growth on my very bony hand. I had a referral from my doctor.

The night prior to the specialist visit, I dreamt I saw the skin specialist examining the nasty growth on my hand. He said to me that it had to be removed instantly. Upon waking I assumed  the dream must be correctional and my right hand and the cancer symbolic. And It may have been that too, like an active parable.  Since I was convinced the dream was a only a correction and not a warning, I did not understand it at the time. I prayed for some understanding as I typed it up.

If we don’t feel that great relief of understanding, we ought not force an interpretation, because if we do, we are bound to do it in our old nature and the truth the Holy Spirit is giving us will be lost to us.

When I was about to leave for the surgery some thirty minutes from home,  my husband asked if he should drive me so he could care for me after the visit. I declined, telling him that this was just a consult; there’s no way there would be surgery today. It was not booked in as such.

When I went in to see the surgeon, he took one look at the growth and declared it needed to be removed instantly – it could not be burnt off due to the depth of the growth and nearness to main veins. I imagined he meant to make a booking for a future time to do the surgery.

However, within minutes I was lying on my back in the next room while a nurse and doctor prepared to remove the growth from the lower area between my thumb and forefinger. I admit I was shocked and lay perfectly still while the area was numbed. I had protested, saying I had no-one to drive me home all the way on the very busy Sydney highway. I was elderly, not confident to drive one handed etc. He disregarded that, saying I’d be right to drive with one hand and rest the other on the wheel. He was very cavalier as he sliced fom my knuckle to my wrist. God forgive him.

I could feel the knife-work and stitching and unfortunately I tensed throughout the whole episode. It took longer than I had imagined as the growth was deep and quite a bit of flesh had to be removed and the sides of my hand pulled together. The wound extended from the knuckle of my index finger down to my wrist. At the age of 70 this was quite a frightening experience for which I had not prepared myself. I was not the bravest soul.

But I was sweating profusely and kept trying to tell myself it couldn’t be shock because it was just a cut on my hand. If the surgeon thought I could drive – shouldn’t he know?

I had no way to get home other than driving and had no idea of buses in that city. I was shaky on my feet and feeling very weak. I considered getting a taxi which would have been beyond what I could afford at that time. Then I considered what the doctor said and thought it best to do as he said. Perhaps I was being a baby.

However, on the highway I began to get both leg and arm cramps, something my body liked to do when I least wanted it to. (Thankfully, I’ve been healed of that.) I hoped to get home safely and slowed down in the slow lane. But eventually I couldn’t control the car and all limbs seized up as well at the hands, fingers, feet and toes of both feet. Then the rest of my voluntary muscles went into cramp, chest, neck etc. I pulled over as best I could and tried to get to my water bottle and salt which I carried to alleviate cramps. It was difficult as both hands and limbs had contracted painfully and wouldn’t come apart to be able to pick up anything. Eventually I made it home, crawling in the slow lane, vowing always to listen to divine warnings in future.

Corrective Dreams

Most of my dreams, however,  have been correctional and yet, in one sense they have been warnings too, because, unknown to me and all whom I had studied with, I was travelling on a path of theological error. All of the correctional dreams were accurately targeted to heal. But, with time and much dream experience it gets so much easier to hear His Voice in both day and night.

Holy Spirit correction is for all Christians to keep us from following our natural and old  tendencies, however He speaks to one. And it is certainly a much clearer voice we hear when we stop listening to the lies of Satan, religiosity and humanism. These ideologies keep us from following the Lamb, Jesus. When we see our carnality in dreams, it makes us realise they don’t match up with the new creation within, and we can then draw from that new creation within instead of the old nature. Dreams help with this differentiation because, as Jeremiah 17:9 reminds us, “The heart (fallen nature) is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?” But the Holy Spirit leads us into all truth when we are His and willing to listen. When it comes in a dream, there’s no denying it, unless we choose to harden our hearts.

Biblical dreams are a great way to renew the mind in scripture and shift gears from flesh to spirit. The goal is to totally renew the mind (soul) so that it is lined up with the new creation spirit within which is knitted to the Lord. Then our total being moves into great functionality – a Hebrew term which our translators render as “peace”. So you can see why spirit walking heals us of depression with its awful disconnect.

Many dreams follow the pattern of the faithful wounds of a friend, as when Nathan said to David, “You are the man.”  David had stolen another man’s wife. Instead of confronting King David head on, Nathan the prophet went to him with a report about a rich man with flocks of sheep who had stolen a poor man’s only ewe lamb. David declared the thief should die. To which Nathan responded, “You are the man.” Thankfully, David repented.

So, when we see what looks like a person in a dream, doing a particular thing especially if it is an “in-law”,  it is likely it is a “you are the man” dream where one is being shown a legalistic (in-law – which is fallen humanistic) attitude in the soul by looking at another person doing that thing. Asking questions of the Holy Spirit is helpful as He will answer when our hearts truly seek to obey Him.

It is important to give a note of encouragement to those who have a dream. Maybe they feel there is a sense of significance for themselves in it, and yet don’t know what it means.

It is especially important to encourage oneself as some dreams can seem troubling and ominous. But rest assured, any biblical dream is one to bless you and not to bring harm. Many times we can awake, recognise a negative symbol like a rat, spider or snake – or even really disgusting things and think the dream means something bad. Some dreams show us doing things we would never do in waking life! Then, we are tempted to think we’d better not delve into any understanding about that! We may fear the Lord is telling us off. But it isn’t always so; and often is not what we initially think when think of the things in the dream as if they are literally going to happen. When we study the dream in its context, we may even find that the Lord is pleased with us, or keeping us away from temptation or showing us how to be an overcomer.

It is good for the novice to ask for help from those who are experienced in dream interpretation from a theological perspective and biblical symbolism. That is why I have the contact box (‘Leave a reply’) at the bottom of my pages, so you can reach out for free assistance with the symbols and / or interpretation. Very often, especially for others, I am given the interpretation by the Holy Spirit; but this is not always the case. If that happens, I can offer general help with identification of the entities, symbols, and the context of the dream. As well as that, in dialoguing with me, you can pick up skills along the way to help with future dreams. For example, I might be able to point out that the Lord has already shown you part of the interpretation within the dream itself.

Did you know that one third of the Bible is about dreams or the results of recounted dreams. In Acts 2 Peter describes the Holy Spirit arrival in God’s people by quoting Joel 2 which predicted that all God’s people would have dreams and visions. If we attend to these, we may be surprised how the Holy Spirit, who wrote the Bible, speaks into our daily lives with Biblical symbols and characters to help us walk more closely with Jesus.

Money, coins, notes and bank cards

Money, economics, bank cards, coins etc are frequently used themes in both the Bible and biblical dreams. The Lord knows that “money speaks” to our fallen nature. We value it and what it can do.

Money in the Bible represents something of value, particularly goodness / righteousness. Money is used symbolically in the Bible because it gives value to the thing being exchanged. Coins or notes / bank cards etc. are exchanged for a thing the buyer values.

It brings a purchase, a multiplication and action, like work. It is these three things that the biblical dream designer, the Holy Spirit speaks about:

Purchase – Isaiah 55 (see below)

Increase – Matthew 25:13-40

Work – of which there are two kinds: the nasty works are our self righteous deeds, often done so others see and know how good we appear. The valuable ones (in God’s eyes) are those acts of kindness to our neighbour that we do when no-one is looking.

Quite a few of Jesus’ parables have to do with things of value, including money. But it must be remembered, whether in the Bible or in biblical dreams, money, even when we use it to buy, is just a symbol.

Money itself is not good or evil. It is the love of money that is idolatry. However, the fear of lack of money, or what it can buy is also idolatry – including talking up shortages.

In Haggai 1:6 we read where God tells those who want to live in wickedness apart from Him, that they are suffering because of it (judgment while in this mortal body). He uses the picture of them putting their wages in a bag full of holes because they hadn’t done what He said.

True Christians, who want to do what is right, trust God for His provision, whether the crops fail, or the banks fail, or whatever. God never fails to provide. Matthew 6:25 – 34. This was written because people who don’t trust God worry about food, clothing and the provision of goods.

That’s why many who claim to be Christians today mistakenly talk about “the mark of the Beast” which they think will be imposed onto or under people’s skin as a government mark that allows the bearer to buy or sell. Whether chips are implanted in the flesh or not, however, has nothing to do with the “the mark of the Beast” in Revelation 13:16 and 17. And it is nothing to be afraid of. Nor should talk of such things be spread around.

This kind of “world ending” talk engenders fear, and that very fact tells you it isn’t God’s truth. Jesus says you can judge people and their doctrine by their fruit (lives / consequences). Nothing done to the body can affect one’s standing with our Lord God in Jesus Christ. He makes that plain in Matthew 5:29-30. It is one’s soul (mind, will and emotions) that must be guarded. Anyone who is “in Christ” is already “sealed / marked” by the Holy Spirit. Only our own persistent unfaithfulness can “unseal” us.

The mark of the beast was a symbol of one’s way of life back in the first century AD. The forehead is the symbol of ones executive thoughts carried out by the right hand which is also, obviously a symbol of one’s behaviour or “fruit”. It referred to those who had aligned themselves with their Roman rulers in ancient (not modern) Israel.

Those who keep repeating the nonsense of “the mark of the Beast” as something for today, are actually putting themselves in the liar’s territory and taking such a mark themselves, forsaking the truth of God’s salvation, protection and provision.

The “Mark of the Beast” – Revelation explains, might temporarily free the bearer from the economic sanctions that the first century Hebrew Christians suffered. But those who accepted that mark – the ones who had crucified Christ and also rejected the apostles’ message, Revelation tells us, are Babylon.

When Babylon falls in Revelation 18 it is Jesus’ prophecy of an actual event that was soon to take place. The prophesied event, which He also spoke of in Matthew 23:38 and Luke 19:41-44 came to pass. We read of Babylon’s identity in a number of places in Revelation (and it’s not a modern nation or entity). For example, “And in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints, and of all who have been slain on the land (of ancient Israel – see Matthew 23:34, 35).” The only city to slay God’s prophets was Jerusalem, over which Jesus wept (Matthew 23: 37) at the end of His prophecy of the final war, destroying that magnificent temple and closing the Old Covenant (OC) Age in 70AD.

In 70AD the nation, apostate ancient Israel, was called by some very colourful and condemning names. She was called variously, “the ethnos”, “Babylon”, “Sodom”, “the harlot”, etc. But now she would fall. She was finished as a theocracy – the faithful in the young eccleisa were vindicated and saved from the wrath of God. The Kingdom of God was established when the Bridegroom suddenly “arrived” and the “door was closed”.

Then the reality which had been celebrated by the shadow / type, The Feast of Tabernacles was able to be enjoyed in a much wider sense – available to everyone in the world. It was a symbol for God indwelling human beings who choose to love and obey Him – those who had waited for and appreciated the justice of Babylon’s fall. For those who know their Jewish festivals, Tabernacles couldn’t come until the Day of Atonement / Judgment of the Land of Israel was complete.

But how many preachers say we have a “tabernacle relationship” with Christ now and yet, at the same time, they’re waiting for the return of the Lord from the “holy of holies” Day of Atonement?

The entire book of Revelation is not about the end of the world – but “the time of the end” of the Old Covenant. The Day of Atonement was complete when the judgment thrones were set up to begin with the “House of God”, i.e., ancient apostate Israel. When we see the Bible as Jesus did – in 2 ages – the OC age that He lived in on earth. He called that “this age” and then “the age to come” – after 70AD. We are now in that “age to come” – not in the last days that the Bible mentions. Those are over. We are in the Kingdom Age when the ecclesia of Christ rules. Believers therefore are the in the fullness of Him who fills all in all.

Economic sanctions have been used against true followers of Christ throughout these last 2000 years, In European history it was the Roman Church that did this. Such sanctions are still used as coercion for social, economic and political reasons. But the accompanying terror preached about a one world government is nothing more than verbal agreement with Satan.

Those who truly love the Lord learn to use their mouths prophetically for healing, victory and not fear. The believer’s life is not to proclaim the end of the world, since God does not. We proclaim its healing and inheritance for the contrite in heart.

This super-abundant life in Christ has always been the major Bible theme. The righteousness Jesus offers is freely available. You cannot “pay” for it with money or your own self-effort of good works. But if we approach Him with true humility, broken and contrite over our own sin, we can identify with His death and rise in newness of life abundantly and great power over sin and evil. We can have Adam’s lost dominion in the earth restored to ourselves to learn about.

In Isaiah 55 we read about an offer to buy the staples, milk, wine and bread at no cost:

“You there! Everyone who thirsts, come to the waters;
And you who have no money come, buy and eat.
Come, buy wine and milk
Without money and without cost.
Why do you spend money for what is not bread,
And your wages for what does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good,
And delight yourself in abundance.
Incline your ear and come to Me.
Listen, that you may live.”

The money represents trust or faith in God here. Milk is a symbol of learning the basics about justice and righteousness. Wine is a symbol of Jesus’ power given to overcome evil; and bread is the symbol of Jesus Christ who we take into our hearts as Lord to get that power of victory over evil.

Money can also be an idol which causes humans to be selfish and so they are cut off from the goodness of God. This can happen, even to poor people who become miserly. Matthew 6 tells us God will provide all we need if we trust Him. Again, it’s always about trusting in the goodness of God. Matthew 6:25 to 34.

Poverty or lack of money is symbolic of sinfulness, as is nakedness and dirty clothes; We see Jesus address those in this condition, using gold as a symbol of the righteousness He has for us as a free gift. We “buy” it by acknowledging our poverty (sinfulness).

“I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see.” Revelation 3:18

Mums and Bubs

There are a number of references to mothers giving birth to both males and females in the Bible. Even though most of them were real people, many of the mothers are also symbolic of other entities.

In 1 Kings 13 we read about two new mothers who gave birth around the same time and lived together because they were prostitutes. The baby of one died in the night, so she switched the babies and took her companions living baby. They came into the court of King Solomon who was world-renown for his wisdom. After hearing the story he called for a sword to divide the child equally between the two women. The liar agreed, while the true mother said, “Don’t harm him, give him to this other woman.” With which, Solomon pronounced the kind hearted woman the mother.

While the story is about his wisdom, it is also about two birthing women. The lying mother doesn’t care for anyone but her own gratification. The true mother gives up / sacrifices her right to the child that he might live. So too with the ekklēsia. The Pharisees of the intertestamental period had only their own position and vain glory in their minds and actions. The true ekklēsia, called “the remnant” served God and others with a sincere heart and did only good and not harm to God’s children. This latter mother “Israel” is the one depicted in Revelation 12.

Besides giving birth to babies, a mother is a nurturer and provider until the child has grown to independence. Does the church ever let many people go and be parents themselves in the spiritual way – without an uncomfortable set of controls by the grandmother?

And does the Bible really teach that a mother symbolises the ekklēsia – that which today we call “church”?

Galatians 4: 21-3 explains it does when we think of the true ekklesia. Paul tells of two women, one as the true ekklēsia and one as the church under slavery. One is the mother who, despite age and infertility, had to come to trust God and bear Isaac, child of faith. And then long before the child of faith was born, her servant girl, bore the natural child Ishmael who was later sent away when the real heir was celebrated. Although it was a messed up domestic situation, God turns it for good by making a line to the Messiah in Israel. And He also creates a picture book for us of what He wants from us: just that we trust / have faith in Him completely and not in keeping ceremonial laws.

Incidentally, I love the Solomon story because both women are described as prostitutes. Yet Solomon has mercy on the one with the pure heart. So it is with us. We all begin life in a fallen state and only the pure in heart will have the “new life” that a baby in dreams represents.

It is only the pure in heart, who decide in favour of righteousness that God recognises as His ekklesia. If we practice religion in the Old Covenant way, we are in the shadows and are holding people back from the wonderful 24/7 liberty in Christ. It’s time to turn away from such bondage and really walk with the real Jesus!

Across the western world churches faced a recent test to see if they would “let my people go”, trust the Holy Spirit with them –  or try to keep control of them denominationally. Many gave way to worldly protocols and stratagems to keep their bricks and mortar supported. That God was sovereign and testing His people with global events should not surprise us. That many didn’t even know they failed is the sad part. More is yet to come because we are promised refining fire. The Lord is looking for those who trust only Him and not the bricks and mortar systems. That trust or faith is not faith until it has been tested as the true ekklēsia.

But how does a mother symbolise the ekklēsia? Galatians 4: 21-31[1] explains two women, one as the true ekklēsia and one as the church under slavery. I used to feel sorry for Hagar on account of the type she represented – rejected woman, until I realised there is much more to her wonderful natural story than I bothered to observe across the Bible. She knew God had heard her cry for help; she was honoured with an angelic visit, she represented the Old Covenant which pointed to Messiah, that is Jesus our Saviour. She was honoured with promises to her regarding Ishmael as a great people which has already been fulfilled.

But in retelling her story of rejection, Paul points out to the Galatians that the Old Covenant has been superseded by the New. They should leave it in the dust and take on the New Covenant symbolised by new wine. A much more powerful covenant for us. The Galatians were leaving biblical family (ekklēsia) practice and opting for obeying ceremonial laws. Yet this is just what the churchianity we have inherited does, even insisting the people pay tithes to a clerical class of others. This isn’t the gospel, but the Old Covenant law, – the very thing such folk should avoid, and allow people the generosity of their liberty in Christ. then people will be true givers.

Although one rarely sees Jesus in dreams, He is just “there” as a Presence beside the dreamer, often as a Husband, Friend or Person whose name means one of His names, such as David, or names with an etymology of Rock, King, etc., depending on the message of the dream. We note also that theophanic visions of Old Testament prophets do not give images of the Lord, lest we are tempted into idolatrous image worship, or the making of artefacts that limit our hearing His Voice.[1]

But to return to my error being show in this dream. God had shown me true fellowship – the symbol being the restful family picnic table of Psalm 23, a family of three enjoying one another’s company around a meal; Father, Son Jesus and the Holy Spirit. He had shown me my lack of love , that is, fear of the unknown, but most of all, He had told me by this dream that I didn’t really know Him. Natural fears, re-enforced by voicing my old nature instead of the new had been lurking in my past and had so clouded my understanding of Who my saviour is. Consequently, I began a journey of learning about the character of Christ through biblical dreams that drove me deeply into God’s Word like never before.

The training I was then guided to online and through sets of audios was really helpful and I learnt how to distinguish biblical dreams from those that arise from our old selfish thinking.[2]

I discovered the unending patience of the Holy Spirit. Often His direction to a personal correction would not be understood, I would write up dream after dream, morning after morning, knowing the biblical symbols, but missing the whole interpretation. There was no Daniel in our little fellowship here to give me an interpretation. So, praying and looking back through the Word documents on my laptop files, I would then see a pattern and suddenly I would know, with great relief, what the interpretation of dozens of dreams would mean. This then enabled me to take on Christ in correcting whatever it was in my life that was not of Him. I learnt to actually live “in Him” in reality and not just in rhetoric.

With a Holy Spiritual dream of correction, when the interpretation is realised, given one doesn’t have a stubborn heart, suddenly the change miraculously happens in one’s life. Old character flaws that caused relationship loss and disquiet to the soul, then fall away. Such joy floods the soul as one has learnt how to be led by the new spirit within and not the soul. Following the spirit means the soul walks also then in this newness of Life. This is what it means to be changed from one glory to another. Glory is not some soulish experience with music in a church service. Glory is moving in and of the identity of Christ. It’s who we are meant to be. The feelings follow and need no band, coloured lights or cathedral atmosphere to bolster them.

The real Holy Spirit creates solid character change and growth. If you have dreams about change rooms, changing clothes etc., pay attention because this is what you are being led into. This is one of the main functions of the night parables or dreams.

I soon realised that Jesus used the same teaching method too when He was teaching using parables. As explained, parables – or night parables in the case of dreams – often retell the same truth using different analogies so that a rounded concept can be gained of a spiritual truth using the practical symbols of our everyday life. Dreams about His kingship and Kingdom from different angles are not unusual either, as people often need reminding of the Lordship of Jesus Christ. He cannot be Saviour if He is not Lord / King of one’s life.

And parables from both testaments are the place to start if we want to develop this Bible type of gift of study. Central to that there is the one parable that Jesus stressed was the one which is foundational to all parables. He told his disciples that the parable of the sower is the most basic one which is required to give light to other parables. In Matthew, Mark and Luke He teaches His loyal followers the step-by-step understanding of the sower and the seed. It is good to look out for events and teachings that appear in all synoptic[3] gospels as the repetition stresses their importance for us.

One of the biggest mistakes made regarding dreams among believers today is to jump in and assume an interpretation without listening carefully to the Holy Spirit and seeking Him in God’s Word. If we do, we are bound to come up with something from our old fallen (pre-Christ) nature. Especially when we first begin. After a while we realise that’s a waste of time and may even think spiritual healing won’t come our way. But if we practise humility, asking for correction and healing – He will certainly bring it.

Dreams are designed to draw one into the Word of God in a very practical way that enables the overcoming of the things that keep one bound up.  When a dream is carnally interpreted, it usually renders a meaning far removed from God’s intention in His Word. – very often one hundred and eighty degrees from the Holy Spirit’s intention. Looking at online “prophets” who recount their dreams and visions and give a carnal interpretation most commonly renders a meaning the opposite of the biblical interpretation. This can be seen in many online instances in the contemporary world of believers. We cannot blame them for it. By and large we in the church have neglected this important gift as part of its pastoring. Without pastoring the gift, and teaching the necessary biblical understanding, people easily go astray.

Unfortunately, many charismatic leaders fail to correctly interpret their dreams and issue a carnal interpretation which is usually mistaken as political. Nothing could be further from the truth of Jesus’ Way.

One of the most important things to say about biblical dreams is that they most commonly are given to keep the believer on the narrow way. They are generally, but not always correctional. And they are generally, but not always personal and not meant to be broadcast for the general church or world. Paul tells us that the Lord chastises those He loves. I feel very loved indeed as at the time of writing. Of the several thousand biblical dreams which I have recorded, most have been correctional enabling a much closer walk with the Lord. The spiritual cleansing that I have enjoyed following this chastisement is greater in the last seven years than in the previous decades of listening to sermons ithreatening eternal conscious torment. We can receive readily from the gentle and profoundly accurate work of the Holy Spirit, correction that an earthly agent could possibly blunder with, causing harm. No-one can tell a human off with such profound and persistent love like the Holy Spirit. No-one brings the refreshment of repentance and absolute liberty like the Lord.

[1] Pictures of Jesus can never do His character justice; but attempting to paint or sculpt such is best avoided. A good depiction of Jesus was shown in the very wise direction of the movie, “The Robe” when Jesus is seen to mercifully give the then slave, Ben Hur a drink. The audience is shown the Lord’s back while the audience’s eye is led to the look of wonder on the face of Ben Hur who is on his knees. This is often the sort of thing that the Holy Spirit does in Biblical dreams; He does not show Himself or the Father or the Son. Instead they appear symbolically. We see this lack of specificity in Ezekiel’s vision in 1:27. We see the vision in detail until it comes to the Source of the Voice and we have only this one verse. It is enough to know we are looking into heaven by the use of the symbolic circles / wheels with the omnipresence, omnipotence and omniscience of the Spirit of the Lord enthroned. No language can describe God this side of eternity and we must learn the biblical ways of symbolic / apocalyptic dreams or miss their biblical message entirely. It is crucial to discard statues of the Lord Jesus and other Bible characters or we will fix our hearts on carnal ways; this is not to make rules – it is not for no reason that we are commanded to make no graven image – but that we should be enabled to worship the Lord where our real eyes are – in the spirit He has newly breathed into us.

[2] The word “carnal” simply is the Bible’s way of describing our fallen, marred human nature, as opposed to the new born spirit Jesus puts within those who trust Him. The two natures of a person who trusts Jesus are in opposition to each other and we need to learn to walk in the new nature of loving and disregard our old harmful ways.

[3] There are four Gospel accounts in the Bible, each with their own special perspective. The three that run along similar lines are Matthew, Mark and Like. They are therefore called “synoptic’ (syn -same; optic -about eyesight or “looking”. John’s wonderful Gospel takes a different approach to the synoptic gospels.

Hay, Stubble and / or Straw

This imagery relates also to green healthy grass and flowers because grass and flowers, eventually, when they die, fade to a brown and lifeless colour.

We see under the heading “Grass” that green grass can mean something very good, but dead grass is just that – a symbol of deathly tendencies and work – even though our life and work may look good to us.

Words related to this are “straw” and “stubble”. While hay is dried grass, straw has no nutrients left in it and stubble, likewise is what is left when the head of grains has been cut off. It often speaks of the uselessness of human carnal nature; or the nature we are born with before God renews one’s spirit in Christ. In particular it speaks of the work one does apart from that which is done in the new created spirit of Christ’s power. If we do things by our human effort, God counts it as hay to be burnt (symbols of destroyed) because it is tainted by the sin nature or fallen soul.

Hay, stubble and straw, along with dead leaves can burn easily and even cause a ravaging fire to destroy many good things.

Primarily we see how this is symbolised in the Bible in 1 Corinthians 3:11-13: “ For no one can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or straw, each one’s work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each one’s work.”

• The quality of the work means whether it is done in the strength of the Holy Spirit or independently.
• The foundation is symbolic of the building of one’s life. Jesus is the only way; the only foundation that works. Otherwise on “the day” which is judgment day at the end of your life, you will be found wanting.
• (Remember that the fire in the Bible is most commonly symbolic of destroying those things that harm God’s kids.)

Horse

The Bible uses the image of a horse / horses to represent power. It is often human power; although Jesus is depicted as riding a horse also, which may speak of his power as “The Son of Man” in that only a perfect human can rescue fallen humanity.

Exodus 14 Paraphrased: “The Egyptians chased after them with all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, his horsemen and his army, and they came near the Israelites.  The Israelites were very afraid as they had the Egyptian army on horseback and in chariots coming from behind and the sea in front. They had nowhere to go. But the Lord heard their cry and His angel went between the Egyptians and Israelites in a cloud to protect His people through the night. Then He parted sea for them to walk across. Yet the horses and Egyptians were drowned as they attempted to follow.

Often, in the Bible, God draws attention to His great power by contrasting horse power as much weaker. Horses are strong; so how much more is the strength of God.

This verse speaks of the strength of horses: Job 39:19 “Do you give the horse his might? Do you clothe his neck with a mane?”

While this one puts natural strength as inferior to the Lord: Psalm 20:7 “Some praise their chariots and some their horses, But we will praise the name of the Lord, our God.” Just as some make their car (chariot) a god today.

In Bible times, a horse represented a level of wealth and status, especially if you commanded horsemen in your army. Just so today, a car can be a status symbol.

Horses can also be symbols of human stubbornness or lack of discernment: Psalm 32:9 “Do not be like the horse or like the mule, which have no understanding, Whose trappings include bit and bridle to hold them in check, Otherwise they will not come near to you.”

Psalm 33:17 “A horse is a false hope for victory; Nor does it rescue anyone by its great strength.”

Sometimes, in a dream, the point is made more clearly by the use of a woman called Roslyn or Rosalind or similar spellings. If you have a relative / friend called by that name, it won’t be about her. More likely it will be a description of your own carnal nature: Etymology is from Old German hros, which means “horse” and lind  which means flexible. Not standing firm. 

The extreme in carnal nature being shown here in the idolatry of Judah: Jeremiah 5:8 “They were well-fed lusty horses, Each one neighing at his neighbour’s wife.”

House / Home

House speaks of the tabernacle / temple in the Old Covenant. See Mark 11:17; Luke 2:49.

In the New Covenant (New Testament) house or home speaks of our indwelling fellowship with God the Father and Jesus Christ, His son in the Person of the Holy Spirit. Believers in Christ become the temple of God, i.e., the temple of the Holy Spirit when the person is born again of the seed of God. It means giving up our self-effort at righteousness and taking the free gift of righteousness won by the life and death of Jesus Christ. The believer then is enabled, at will, to live out of the spirit within him/herself and not the old Adam nature.

The main scriptures for these images are as follows:

Acts 7:48-50 – the Father’s intention was always to live intimately with humans. The temple was only a shadow to show what was to come after humanity was rescued from their sin nature and transferred back to the Kingdom of the Son of His love.

John 14:2 Jesus is comforting His disciples who hear He is going to leave them. He promises to come back to them. He is going to prepare many mansions, rooms or dwellings (μονή -monē) where they can be together. These chapters, John 14 to 16 are not about going to heaven. Yes, the “mansion” or room is in heaven, but it is the “temple”, where Jesus will abide with them in the form of the Holy Spirit. We can see this clearly if we read on to verse 23, “If anyone loves Me, he will follow My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our dwelling with him.” The believer, while still on earth in his / her body, is spiritually seated with Christ in Heavenly realm; this is a greater reality to the sincere believer than his earthly surrounds. See Ephesians 2:6.

Therefore, the condition of a house in dreams is symbolic of how effective the believer is in living in Christ’s way and not the old nature. Matthew 23:38 speaks of a house that is about to become obsolete because Jesus is fulfilling all the law of the old temple sacrifice system in the cross, resurrection and Atonement Day return. An old broken-down house says it all – “desolate”. A newly painted, newly furnished house with gleamingly clean windows speaks of the new nature being lived – with Christ indwelling.

Further scriptures which may have symbols related to houses in the same dream are: Matthew 7:24; 12:4; 12:25; 15:24; Mark 3:27; Luke 1:31; 6:48; 11:24 and 25; John 2:16 and 17; Hebrews 3:6; 1 Timothy 3:15 1 Peter 2:5.

Apricot

Apricot represents Jesus Christ as first love and first fruit. Apricot appears in the Song of Solomon 2:3, “As an apricot tree stands out in the forest, my lover stands above the young men in town. All I want is to sit in His shade, to taste and savour His delicious love.” Holman Christian Standard Bible

The word “apricot” has an etymology of early ripening fruit, and like the verse above, is a symbol of Jesus Christ. He is the “First Fruit” as seen in 1 Corinthians 15: 20, 21, 23 and 24:

“But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep (died). For since by man came death, by Man also came the resurrection of the dead.”

“But each one in his own order: Christ the first fruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming. Then comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He puts an end to all rule and all authority and power.”

Animals

Animals are commonly called “beasts” in the Bible. Some represent something good, such as the Lamb for Jesus or chickens.

Doves, donkey and the ant are also seen as positive symbols.

Chickens represent the believers whom Jesus would take under His “wings”. See also Psalm 91:1-4

But more often, animals are seen as fallen humans behaving in a way that is unspiritual – even if it appears good / law abiding. This is because people who are unspiritual are left to their fallen nature which can be like mere animals. Atheists today often claim we are no more than animals which is interesting.

So we have to decide are these positive and desirable animals or are they a negative symbol.  It will depend on the other dream situations and symbols.

An example of this deterioration of humanity is seen in Daniel 4. Nebuchadnezzar’s arrogance made his mental health degenerate into an animal state. Daniel had warned him that his dream meant he would graze like an animal:

Daniel 4:28 “But all these things did happen to King Nebuchadnezzar. ²⁹ Twelve months later he was taking a walk on the flat roof of the royal palace in Babylon. ³⁰ As he looked out across the city, he said, ‘Look at this great city of Babylon! By my own mighty power, I have built this beautiful city as my royal residence to display my majestic splendour.’

³¹ “While these words were still in his mouth, a voice called down from heaven, ‘O King Nebuchadnezzar, this message is for you! You are no longer ruler of this kingdom. ³² You will be driven from human society. You will live in the fields with the wild animals, and you will eat grass like a cow. Seven periods of time will pass while you live this way, until you learn that the Most High rules over the kingdoms of the world and gives them to anyone he chooses.’

³³ “That same hour the judgment was fulfilled, and Nebuchadnezzar was driven from human society. He ate grass like a cow, and he was drenched with the dew of heaven. He lived this way until his hair was as long as eagles’ feathers and his nails were like birds’ claws.”

Also Psalm 22:12, 13 Predicting Jesus on the Cross:

“My enemies surround me like a herd of bulls;
    fierce bulls of Bashan have hemmed me in!
¹³ Like lions they open their jaws against me,
    roaring and tearing into their prey.”

Jesus called Herod “that fox” Luke 13:32

In Amos 4:1 Israelites are likened to pampered cows:

“You women of Samaria are fat cows! You mistreat and abuse the poor and needy, then you say to your husbands, “Bring us more drinks!”

And in Jeremiah 13:23b we see the leopard’s spots symbols of flaws / sin:

“Can a leopard take away its spots?
Neither can you start doing good,
    for you have always done evil.”

Wolves are seen as devourers and depict bad people who seek to destroy believers.

Luke 10:3 “Now go, and remember that I am sending you out as lambs among wolves.”

Acts 20:29 “I know that false teachers, like vicious wolves, will come in among you after I leave, not sparing the flock”.

List of unclean land animals – while these are only unclean under ceremonial law, we see unclean animals are used symbolically by the Holy Spirit in the dream that Peter had in Acts 10 which opened the door for Gentile salvation.

 Acts 10:12  “In the sheet were all sorts of animals, reptiles, and birds.

Badgers, Bears, Camels, Cats (and all larger cats like tigers etc), Dogs (all canines such as Foxes, Wolves), Donkeys, Elephants, Gorillas, Horses (and Zebras), Kangaroos, llamas, Mice, Rats, Monkeys, Possums, Pigs (Swine), Rabbits and Hares, skunks, Slugs and Snails, Squirrels, Worms, Amphibians (Frogs, Turtles, etc), Molluscs (includes snails and oysters etc) Reptiles (Snakes, Lizards, Crocodiles) these generally represent lies.

Angles, Geometry

Angles represent an amount of turning. In biblical dreams this commonly means repentance. Corners in dreams may have a similar meaning; although a cornered person may represent coming to the end of one’s tether and therefore being confronted by the Holy Spirit – in the corner there is nowhere to go but to turn around. Turning a corner also symbolises a repentant path, especially 180 degrees.

With angles, if it is a particular angle, right angle (correct / corrected) or acute etc., we may note its particular size. If a numerical value is given for the angle such as 180 degrees, we know this is a U turn that we are encouraged to take in our walk with the Lord, back to Him. Sometimes the numerical value, if stated in the dream, is like the numbers indicated on the clock – having biblical meaning apart from quantity.

Going down a passage or hallway and then turning right may indicate a path in time before such a move to a more righteous position in the Lord.

Geometric shapes are also considered in biblical dreams. For example a triangle, being a three sided shape may symbolise the trinity, or refer to oneself within the trinity – as humans are body + soul + spirit. Being made in God’s image, we are also tripartite.

But if the word geometry is either in the dream, or comes to mind immediately upon waking, one may be seeing something of the earth which has been “measured”. 

Arrows

Arrows may be positive or negative symbols in dreams because both appear in the Bible. It depends who is holding or firing the arrows, and at whom.

In the positive, arrows, particularly contained in a quiver, may represent one’s children. This is seen in the second half of Psalm 127 in verses 3 to 5:

“Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord,
The fruit of the womb is a reward.
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior,
So are the children of one’s youth.
Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them;
They shall not be ashamed,
But shall speak with their enemies in the gate.”

Arrows are mentioned as “fiery darts or arrows” in a negative context, describing spiritual attacks from the devil. These can be extinguished by our faith,

“In every situation take the shield of faith, and with it you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.” Ephesians 6:16

We only have to resist the devil / tempting thoughts and he must flee from us as believers have a new creation nature.

Arrows can also be sharp, piercing words, Psalm 64:2-4

^“Hide me from the secret plots of the wicked,
From the rebellion of the workers of iniquity,
Who sharpen their tongue like a sword,
And bend their bows to shoot their arrows—bitter words,
That they may shoot in secret at the blameless;
Suddenly they shoot at him and do not fear.”

They can also symbolise enemy attacks of physical nature as well as personal – as in Psalm 64 above. These destructions cannot harm the believer who is kept in Christ. If persecutions, they are not to be feared:

“You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor of the arrow that flies by day.” Psalm 91:5

The sin nature in humanity is also subject to the “arrows” of God. Anything that harms His children is an enemy of God. Sin must be destroyed for humankind to be free of it. Many Old Testament arrow symbols are used to describe God’s supernatural weapons., For example,

“They (God’s enemies) devise iniquities:
“We have perfected a shrewd scheme.”
Both the inward thought and the heart of man are deep.

But God shall shoot at them with an arrow;
Suddenly they shall be wounded.
So He will make them stumble over their own tongue;
All who see them shall flee away.”

Bar or Disbar breaking the curse of legalism

When the word “bar” appears in dreams, or there is a barrier, like a boom gate we are often being told of blockages caused by either legalistic attitudes or curses. This is because the word “bar” in our language is related to both a barrier and the law.

Etymology Online is a very helpful site when we come to words which may not appear to be in our English translations. In fact, they often point to Greek and Hebrew origins that then link us into our Bible study. Not everyone is as excited about etymology as I am. It’s not everyone’s calling. But it is worth noting here because when we look up https://www.etymonline.com/search?q=bar and scroll down we find this for the word bar:

“whole body of lawyers, the legal profession,” 1550s, a sense which derives ultimately from the railing that separated benchers from the hall in the Inns of Court”.

Now we know that a covenant is a legal transaction and binding. The Bible teaches the power of words to bless or curse as well. These are legal matters that can be revoked. Satan certainly considers curses binding. It is for us to refute every word that is set in judgment against us. It is our confession in Christ with our mouth that expresses saving faith given by God. We enact it through our freewill.

For me, the major “bar” to my receiving healing in my body, and also primarily of my soul (mind and emotions) came from the curse of the law set in place in my family of origin through the British Israel religion of my father. This is a false religion and very binding in aspects of the ceremonial laws. In my case the most binding part was the food laws, but it coloured my life, my thinking and finally my health so that I spent decades first in discomfort and eventually in continual pain. It all stopped abruptly when I broke that curse and began to speak the opposite, using scriptures as blessings over myself. It was a simple process. the erosion of old thoughts, and replacement with healthy ones, however, takes time walking with the Lord – but it does transform the believer’s life (Romans 12:2). The speed of transformation of the mind depends on one’s determination to believe the Word of God and hold fast to His truth about the healing of our bodies and not the devil’s lies.

What those who are emancipated from legalistic curses find is that they are amazed that they were so deceived in this particular matter.  “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” Galatians 5:1.

Other “bar” references in dreams can be things like a boom gate that obstructs, hinders or impedes one’s progress. For people in legalistic bondage or a legalistic church this kind of dream symbols will be repeated. There are of course many other images that Jesus used related to legalism and you will find those under “Scot”, “white wash” or chalk, lime, “plank of wood (beam in the eye)” and other entries under this tab.

If there is a matter of sailing in a dream with a sand bar stopping one’s passage / navigation, this too speaks of a legalistic life. Navigation, anchors, sailing and the like are also biblical dream metaphors. Sailing often refers to one’s ministry as it pictures Paul’s journeys. We are to imitate Paul spiritually where He did in Christ.

Bear / s

Bears are typically depicted as strong destroyers in the Bible. Like all symbols, there are aspects of the natural object being depicted.

Bears commonly symbolise political entities, sometimes represented as political leaders but can appear as either God’s agent or an agent of punishment of another entity in dreams.  

Proverbs 28:15 “Like a roaring lion and a rushing bear, is a wicked ruler over a poor people.”

Bears can be symbols of righteous judgment. 2 Kings 2:23  

King David, as a warrior is also likened to a bear. 2 Samuel 17:8 Then Hushai said, “You yourself know your father and his men, that they are warriors and they are fierce, like a bear deprived of her cubs in the field.

Daniel’s Chapter 7 dream, which was a series of pictures / visions, was a prophecy of kingdoms related to Israel’s future. He had a vision of the kingdoms that would come from his time onwards till the cross. The second beast is described as a “bear”: Daniel 7:5 And behold, another beast, a second one, resembling a bear. And it was raised up on one side, and three ribs were in its mouth between its teeth; and they said this to it: ‘Arise, devour much meat / flesh!’  Daniel was given the interpretation and this second “beast” was Medo-Persia.

Daniel 7:17 and 18 “‘These great beasts, which are four in number, are four kings / empires who will arise from the earth. But the saints (believers) of the Highest One will receive the kingdom and take possession of the kingdom forever, for all ages to come.” These “great beasts” are clarified also in the Bible as Babylon, invaded by Medo-Persia (one side being higher) then Greece and finally Rome. This highly symbolic mention of the bear, seen as representing Medo-Persia, came to punish and overtake Babylon – the very kingdom which had destroyed Israel’s temple, taken the gold and precious furnishings and exiled nearly all the Jews. For this treatment of the Jews, Babylon was punished and Cyrus the Mede was God’s choice political leader to do so. The restoration of the Jews was important, not so much politically on the world stage; rather, the Royal Line of Judah was to be preserved to bring Messiah’s birth.

So, when we see a bear in a dream, we know that punishment of God’s enemies is intended. God is at enmity with anything that comes against His children and stops their healing. So, this is a good thing.

A bear may also be seen eating a smaller animal in a dream, such as a “black dog”. When it is an Australian “Bear”, i.e., a Koala, it may seem ridiculous. But the message is this – the Koala who usually dines on leaves in Australia, is the Australian entity which will defeat depression (the black dog). It will appear impossible since Koalas are not usually carnivorous – but the black dog in this case is not of flesh and the koala is behaving like a real bear / destroyer / punisher. The black dog can also represent other Aussie ills to be eaten / destroyed. Koalas are not only indicative of an Australian scene – they speak of a final and desirable situation.  Aussies love koala bears – even though technically they are really marsupials.

Revelation picks up this imagery, including the fact that such things arise from the sea – (the sea symbolising fallen humanity). Revelation 13 “The dragon stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast coming out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on its horns, and on each head a blasphemous name. The beast I saw resembled a leopard, but had feet like those of a bear and a mouth like that of a lion. The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority.”     Each of these animals has a symbolic idea to describe the entity. The lion’s mouth suggests he speaks like Jesus (the Lion of the tribe of Judah). This indicates he’s a liar appearing to be light, but really is evil.

A panda bear, being black and white, when in one’s dream, adds the extra idea of “mixture” of righteousness and evil. Theologians call this syncretism. In simple language, it is idolatry when one mixes Christianity with any other practice – Christ alone is the Way, the Truth and the Life, abundant life! See John 10.

Bread

Bread in dreams symbolies Jesus Christ who said, “I am the bread of life.” John 6:35.

If the bread is broken, it symbolises the body of Christ broken for you. Matthew 26:26.

Bread can also be a symbol of the Word of God that one has eaten or is eating. Conversely, moldy bread, or dry crust would represent spoilt word of God – something wrong with what you have been taught about God in Christ Jesus. It is God warning you that you have been deceived into believing falsehood. Joshua 9:4 to 13.

it can also symbolise a lack of freshness in the bread (Word of God) you last read – in other words, you haven’t read / heard God’s word recently and have begun to live without His divine input.

Flat bread, made without yeast or rising is a symbol of affliction (Deauteronomy 16:3), or the memory of afflication.

Take note if there is a label on the bread wrapping as well and if any entity in the dream checks the kind of “bread” you have been eating. It is a check on whether you have “eaten” of Christ. This is symbolic, of course and is checking if you have taken Him into your life absolutely.

Garden

he Bible begins and ends with a garden. Each time it is depicted as idyllic. People love greenery, flowers and fruit imagery for this reason. It reminds us of life. So the condition of a garden in a dream is very telling about one’s life.

As well as beginning and ending with a garden, the Bible has a central love story about a couple’s romance. It is a symbol of Jesus Christ and His bride, the true ecclesia.

These verses are from that poetry book The Song of Solomon:

Song of Solomon 4:12 “A locked garden is my sister, my bride, A locked spring, a sealed fountain.”

Song of Solomon 4:15 “You are a garden spring, A well of fresh water, And flowing streams from Lebanon.”

Song of Solomon 4:16  The Bride responds, “Awake, north wind, And come, wind of the south; Make my garden breathe out fragrance, May its balsam oils flow. May my beloved come into his garden And eat its delicious fruits!”

When we dream of grass, our attention may directed also to its condition, dry or verdant, tall or cut. We may also notice if it is feeding any animals and what those animals are.

Relaxing in verdant pastures is an allusion to Psalm 23 when the person is in relationship to the Lord. Walking on lovely grass may speak of healing the feet or walk with the Lord. But burning dry grass speaks about some form of either judgment or acknowledgement that life is short. See also the entry about “Hay”.

Verdant green of grass may speak of innocence as well. Is the grass under a tree’s shade? Is it being cut / mowed; and if so, by whom or what method?

As always, the context of the dream, the focus and relationship to the details of the dream help us to understand the biblical symbolism presented. At first you may need a lot of help to understand spiritual messages in dreams. Use the contact form if desired; it won’t cost you anything.

We also see in Jeremiah 14:5 that the female deer calves in a field and then forsakes her young because she can find no grass. This symbolises the lack of the Word of God in the ecclesia which results in evangelism with no discipleship.

But in Psalm 92:14, those who are “doers of the Word of god …” stay fresh and green”; and in Psalm 23 – the Lord is our shepherd who makes us lie down in “green pastures” – a picture of rest. It is the same truth as in the lover’s bed in the Song of Solomon 1:16 “Behold, thou art fair, my beloved, yea, pleasant: also our bed is green.“

Green grass may also speak of “faith” in God’s Word (salvation) and provision: John 6:10 “And Jesus said, ‘ Make the men sit down.’ Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand.” Jesus then fed them all miraculously.

And in Jeremiah 11:16, God’s love for His child caused Him to call her “Green Olive Tree”; but later she turned from Him, sadly. But we may always turn back to Him and be assured of His open arms for us.

A dream featuring extra large ears on a person, no ears, highlighted ears or itching ears are all biblical messages.

Jesus is frequently recorded using this metaphor; so if any of the above appear in your dreams, you can bet it’s Jesus speaking through His wonderful Holy Spirit. He loves to use exaggeration and ridiculous pictures to make a point – like beasts with seven heads! (Revelation 13:1) such imagery is what originally was meant by the word “apocalypse”/

While ears speak of physical hearing, Jesus’ cryptic phrase, “He who has ears, let him hear (what the Spirit is saying),” seems strange. Of course they can hear sounds. But what the ear is meant to represent is hearing at a spiritual level. For this to happen we need to “tune in”. All people are designed to hear spiritually, Jesus says so in John 10:27. But the will is involved because this communication – like all inter-personal relationships – involves listening to each other. It is a two-way thing.

Listening to hear Him also takes a bit of practice as there are other “voices” that don’t have our best interest at heart. One is our own fallen nature which we can see from the dream teaching, is our own will, pre-programmed mind and emotions. All these are predisposed to take us downward even when we are trying to elevate ourselves. The newly created spirit in Christ is what is able to “hear” the spiritual healing message, if we really want to.

What I have found is that the Lord wants us to hear and will repeat things via His Spirit if we are trying, but not getting it. And the other thing that is so very good is that the more we practise listening – whether via dreams, visions, inner knowing or hearing from another person, reading it etc., it does get easier. The disciples found this when they first tried to comprehend His parables. After some time hearing such symbolic stuff, they started to say He was speaking clearly. But if we look at those later parables – they were in symbols too. What had changed? Their hearts and therefore their spiritual discernment. Such skills are priceless on our journey of spiritual healing.

Itching ears speak of hearing and wanting to hear things that favour our sickness / fallenness and not good things; 2 Timothy 4:3.

Ear-rings also speak of hearing God. Pierced ear-rings in dreams speak of Jesus being pierced for our sins, and then, if we really take up our cross, our ears have been pierced or crucified. Being HIs is an absolute; we can’t hedge our bets and have some other thing more important in our lives.

If the ear-rings in the dream are fancy, but not pierced, that tells us we are listening to the wrong voice that denies our spiritual healing.

Excrement

Dreams of various kinds about excrement or poo are also biblical. Does God use such symbolism for disgusting sin? He certainly does. We read of poo, yes, God mentions human poo, not just animal fertiliser, in Ezekiel as well as in other places.

To the post-modern reader, Ezekiel may seem a little insane; but we must recall that there were no screens or billboards in Ezekiel’s day, and these were the graphics that God gave. Pictures like the one in Ezekiel 4:12-15, would have spoken volumes for Ezekiel’s contemporaries. It may bring some questioning for us, as we read them. But they are not easily forgotten imagery. Steve Gregg notes that the visual pictures we form as we read of odd things like the prophet cooking using excrement as fuel and sending his cut hair thither and yon as a message, as very memorable. And by the way, “farts” also appear in God’s Word, so we shouldn’t be surprised to hear them in a biblical correction or informative dream either. I was once listening to a preacher in domestic conversation. He described the adult child of one of the congregants as a “drop kick”. It was just idle speech. But our Father warns us against this kind of talk against others. The comment troubled me as it came from someone whom I should be able to look up to, God forgive him. But that night the Lord showed me the same situation but instead of words, foul farting came out and the interpretation of this was given immediately from Isaiah 26:18. Giving birth to wind, not the effective, healing breath of God, but of something detrimental, useless, failing to do the good that our words and deeds are meant to do.

I discovered how similar dreams are to the parables in the Bible, in that, when we are sincere in our hunger to know His perfect will for us, the Holy Spirit will give even a set of dreams all pertaining to the same issue of guidance and correction. Yet each dream either approaches the same issue using different symbols (as in the Kingdom parables of Matthew 13) – or progresses. The dreams of a night, indeed often of many nights tend to the same end. That, in itself helps us as we dialogue in the mornings with the Holy Spirit about the dream, so that we can understand what we are being told.

We can relate to the Holy Spirit like we would respond to a patient and loving teacher who wants us to get it right,

We need to remember that people in dreams are generally not the actual person seen or named. They are usually symbolic of either their name or role. For example a person named Basil may well be Jesus because the name means King. A president or prime minister of your country, likewise is not speaking of politics, but of the kingship of Jesus. He is the number one (prime) minister to you. Jesus spoke of the Father as a “king” in parables. He also used analogies like, “farmer” (vinedresser) etc.

Often there are two other people with you in the dream, making three altogether. This is very common. One is the spirit, one the soul and one the body. Usually two of the three dialogue together and can often be opposed to one another in values. The spirit, if the person knows Christ will be the correct and perfect one, ie., Christ like. The soul (mind , will and emotions) is being led to line up with the inner newly created Christ-like one. That is the purpose of such dreams. Sometimes, one of the old people will be wrinkled – this indicates one’s old Adam nature. The Bride /Wife of Christ is “without wrinkes”. Ephesians 5:27). When we were born from above, our spirit is newly created in line with God’s perfect righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:17-21), but our emotions and mind are still in the old fallen nature, however much we think of ourselves as a good person. The soul must line up with the new spirit within which happens when we are transformed by the renewal of our mind through hearing and doing God’s word. This we are told in 12:2. Without this alignment, we can feel the dissociation and discomfort until we repent of the particular thing the Lord is bringing to our notice. Thus, “line upon line, we grow”, if we have ears to hear (Isaiah 28:11 and 12).

Most dreams are correctional; a few are directional; some are for a later time, preparing us, as in Joseph’s dreams.

Sometimes, in dreams, I lived Bible passages that people would consider obscure. For example, one night, I had a perplexing dream. This was a few years into the dream ministry, having worked through several thousand dreams and having begun to help others, I had a dream in which I was flying in a “scroll” flying high in the air. I had to hold cords to manage its descent to earth, rather like a hang-glider, except it was a wide rectangular scroll. I sat on it and had to carry the children who sat with me on the “scroll” and my job was to get them safely landed. I kept speaking to the kids, telling them I’d get them home.[1]

Later, I realised that the “children” we carry can be the other parts of our being. The spirit should carry, spiritually the soul (mind, will and emotions) which also carry the body. We should not let the emotions, or our old carnal nature lead us because we want to grow up into Christ. When our lives become Christ-like, we can be a blessing also, then to our families etc. All are children of God.

But back to the dream:

We landed at the front of my childhood church to find it broken down except for the original back part. There I met a beautiful golden haired being who stood at the front of the church and asked to see my credentials. All I had in my hand was an empty bread bag with the label on it. The messenger said my ministry to proceed was approved because of the bread I had eaten. In the dream this did not seem at all silly. The bread, I realised when I awoke, was Jesus who claims, metaphorically to be the “Bread (sustenance) of Life”. I had eaten of Him, metaphorically.[2] This was just an assurance of salvation and nothing special. But to the dreamer, these kind of assurances are very real and comforting. It was very comforting to me at the time because I was still under the mistaken impression that God burns people in hell; so I was walking in a measure of fear that humans are not designed for.

However, the flying scroll in the dream puzzled me exceedingly and for twenty-four hours my mind kept returning to the flight. It had been exhilarating – in the dream I was always aware of someone who was not on the “scroll” but flying next to me and telling me to be gentle on the cords or we could crash land.[3)

Flying, especially without the aid of an aircraft in a dream simply means the times we are to be what the Bible calls, “in the Spirit”.

I did enjoy the flying, and had experienced quite a few dreams in which I flew high in the sky – sometimes without aircraft. It is a most exhilarating experience and indicates that one can “fly” in the spiritual realm. It isn’t necessarily an approval of what one is up to in waking life, but an assurance that this is possible – to live 24/7 in Holy Spirit power in our ordinary lives

And I know that I was not fully living in the spirit at that time!

But I knew with this “scroll” dream that it was pointing to something I was to do in the Lord, to get the children to “land” safely. But what this meant in practical terms was totally beyond my comprehension at that time. Still, I knew by this time, that if we trust the Lord and commit our way to Him, He will explain before we are due to do whatever the interpretation is. I had “jumped the gun” too many times before and missed the mark in the very early days of the dream ministry, so now I was learning to wait for Him.

The next night I still had no interpretation for the dream, I knew Who the Bread was that had justified me, but the scroll and the guy flying parallel to help was a mystery. It began to concern me and I couldn’t sleep. So, during the night I got out of bed and crept downstairs to sit in a lounge chair and pray. My Bible was on the coffee table and I picked it up. It fell open – and I have never been one to just open the Bible to any old page and think that is Bible study – but this night the lamp light caught the print and I saw the words, “Vision of the Flying Scroll”. I am ashamed to admit that, at that time Zechariah was not a book I had engaged with other than zipping through its seemingly bizarre accounts to get to something more “reasonable”; so it was in the distant forgotten compartment of my seminary memories. But there, in answer to my prayer,  was the flying scroll in the open Bible in my lap!

Zechariah (5:1-5) wrote of his vision, “Then I raised my eyes again and looked, and behold, there was a flying scroll. And he said to me, “What do you see?” And I said, “I see a flying scroll; its length is twenty cubits, and its width ten cubits.” Then he said to me, “This is the curse that is going forth over the face of the entire land; everyone who steals certainly will be purged away according to the writing on one side, and everyone who swears falsely will be purged away according to the writing on the other side. I will make it go forth,” declares the Lord of armies, “and it will enter the house of the thief and the house of the one who swears falsely by My name; and it will spend the night within that house and destroy it with its timber and stones.”

What was amazing about the dream, was that many other dreams had been about myself being a church cleaner and scrubbing the timber and stones on the floors, even cleaning up horse dung[3] from church floors – these dreams now began to make sense. I initially thought it was about others, but that is rarely the case with biblical dreams. It was my own life that had lies in it. It was my own life that the devil had interfered with, stealing my peace and health.

I needed to clean up my ideas of what His beloved ecclesia actually is – and in particular who I am in Christ. I knew the facts. I knew the New Testament and could quote and teach it. But there were some old messages given by relatives, maybe well meant as “correction” that had impacted how I thought of myself; and it wasn’t holy. Obviously what I had inherited in terms of understanding God’s message was good for others, but my imaginings had a gospel with a floor (foundational teaching) covered in horse dung. Later I learnt that the false teaching was about eternal conscious torment (ECT) which error is explained in my audio book on this site.

When people have dreams that include excrement (poo), they usually thing that this cannot be a bible dream of any help. But God uses this imagery in the Bible often enough to know that this picture is one intended to bring us out of trouble. In my case the lies and stealing in Zechariah’s scroll were about the fear and loss of love I was teaching associated with ECT.

And so in my dream about cleaning up horse poo we see biblically that horses speak of power – commonly but not always of humanism. The poo probably speaks for itself for you – but if not, there are scriptures (speaking of the accurate language renderings) which are about excrement, filth etc that show us it is an extreme of our fallenness. One instance is in Ezekiel 4:12 “And you shall eat the food as you would a barley cake, after you bake it over dried human excrement in the sight of the people.”  So, you see God uses language and things in prophecy that even Ezekiel turned up his nose at. He had to do this – but God made a concession to the prophet’s nicety by allowing it to be cow poo – but yes, God uses poo in lots of different ways in dreams to help get us out of the mire – never to condemn us. I’ll put other examples  in the dream dictionary eventually.

The wonderful thing about being a “dreamer” of Joel and Acts 2 gifts, is that one is driven into the Word of God again and again at meaningful and deeper levels to discover the God Who is calling and empowering one to live in His love like never before.

Every human being given life has this one great calling: to love God and love our neighbour as ourselves.

To have this love, to live in it, is the most exhilarating feeling of joy and liberty. No depression can dwell there. The God-given exhilarating emotion of love for others in waking life when we begin to see the simplicity of His Gospel is symbolised by the exhilaration of moving / flying in the Spirit in the dreams.

Yet, still, despite the manifold healing I was experiencing spiritually and physically, when I picked up the Bible to read I could sometimes, but not always, feel condemned. It was as if there was still a big block in my life. I even dreamed of trying to climb a flight of stairs into a light filled attic only to find someone shoving a big wooden block painfully into my knees.[4]

Later, I was taken to dining table where a beautiful woman told me not to fear about the stumbling block – it wasn’t my fault. (Matthew 18:7; 23:13; Revelation 2:14) The dining table symbolises eating truth – God’s word as spiritual food. through dreams, the Lord is moving many people out of the religious model which is just like the fallen world, and into the divine relationship if His intention through Jesus Christ.

In time, and after many, many biblical dreams and helping others with dreams, I knew if I prayed for more answers, I would receive more liberty in Christ. It was becoming an exciting journey of expecting God to move in my life in a great big personal house clean up. And there were plenty of dreams with that symbol. Shifting house; moving house; new house; painting the house – and always my constant Companion alongside. He would sometimes appear as my Husband and clean my sink or move my furniture out of the former “house”. [5]

The flying scroll dream wasn’t making me “special”; it is about the ministry and calling of all believers to come out of mere humanism and back to Jesus Christ alone as King of the family of God. We proclaim liberty to the captives.

[1]“Home” in dreams refers to that intimate relationship that each follower of Jesus has whereby the Holy Spirit actually dwells inside the person. It is the John 14:23 I was searching for. What the Bible calls “tabernacling”.

[2] I found this interesting, as I knew it was a symbol because of the nature of the dream, and yet I still held to the false doctrine of transubstantiation that came into belief starting in the 12^th and 13^th centuries and was formalised at the Council of Trent of 1545–63. It would take more biblically referenced dreams for the Lord to get through to renew my mind in the apostle’s teaching on the bread and wine. The word “sacrament” isn’t a biblical word.

[3] Horses in the Bible symbolise strength, both human and Divine. Most commonly they depict human strength and the excrement symbolizes all that is wickedness to be got rid of – it stinks! So says the Bible. So the two together = “horse dung” symbolizes the wickedness of those in power in the church.

[4] The block is what the New Testament calls  “skandalon” in Greek, which is where we get our word, scandal from. It can be seen used in  Matthew 18:7 “Woe to the world because of its stumbling blocks! For it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come; but woe to the person through whom the stumbling block comes!” That the block was shoved at my knees meant I couldn’t bend / bow in worship. Knees symbolise both worship and children on your lap (Genesis 50:23 “Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim’s sons; also, the sons of Machir, the son of Manasseh, were born on Joseph’s knees.”) I was trying to find my way to the light from above and being blocked by an entity. At the time I understood the interpretation, but not who was doing the blocking. That would come in many later dreams as I continued to ask questions of my Teacher, the precious Holy Spirit.

[5] Matthew 23:38 “See, your house is left to you desolate!” These were the words of Jesus to the Religious traditionalists. Yet the wonderful words of His which follow promise that even though they would walk into their own curse of 70AD, they would see Him again in a different light when they would bless the Lord Jesus Christ (verse 39).

I have been fortunate in being led to help people in finding relief, particularly from repeated, troubling dreams.

Most people struggle with the symbols in dreams, at first. But, hey, we live with symbols and use icons and logos all the time. Obviously a football team called “Tigers” are not really animals. But the name implies something for their fans, their opponents and themselves.

The Bible is rich in symbolism.

Dreams can show you some pretty unnatural behaviours such as a person morphing from one thing into another. That shouldn’t phase us either as screen adverts often use this technique. The morphing effect is also entirely divine (biblical), as we see in John’s apocalypse with a bride who morphs into a heavenly temple and later, a garden.

The reason for symbols or picture language is that we need to be an earnest participant in the Divine / human relationship. Jesus explains this to His earnest followers when they ask why others aren’t introduced to interpretations of parables. It’s a call to go deeper in enquiry to learn about the spiritual realm that is of God and not of dark things that can harm us. God doesn’t want a one-sided love. He is not one to force His love. That would be domestic abuse and He is not an abuser. Neither is He into the punishment of His children for the sake of hurting them – but more of this later, too.

We are meant to respond to dreams

But our Father God in Christ is no casual lover to throw His love to those who don’t want a two-way relationship. He responds to those who He sees are responding to Him.

Dreams often feature people who symbolise things other than themselves. They can feature death. This can alarm the dreamer. Most commonly the death of someone, or even a favourite pet in a dream is not a prediction of that person’s / pet’s death, but the “death” or end of something they symbolise. This is often the meaning of their name, but it can be their vocation. So, a doctor typically symbolises Jesus, the healer. But, let’s say, for example that you dream of your sister-in-law dying. No. It’s not a prediction of the woman dying at all. Most probably it has nothing whatsoever to do with that particular person. In fact, depending on other elements of the dream, this usually is one of the best dreams one can have. It means the death of legalism. That means an invitation to put an end to trying to be good and always feeling a failure because you can’t keep the rules. The terms “sister”, being “in law” and “death” in this case are all very common Bible symbols and things. The dream is saying your straining and failures are “finished”. A dream character may even say, “It is finished,” or “it is done”.

When I first started in what I call the Holy Spirit’s “Dream Ministry”, I had little idea of the richness of symbolism in Divine dreams. I knew there were symbols; but the extent of them and what they all meant came as the Holy Spirit took me through the dream foci and details as they appear in the Bible. I didn’t ask for dreams in prayers or ever think that dreams would continue to be a major study for me. It has been a fun study and I love working with the Holy Spirit who is a gentle and very patient teacher. What He loves is a persistent heart that is willing to push past any barrier to hear what the Divine Father is saying.

It all seemed to begin for me seven years ago. Actually, as the dreams persisted I began to see I had been prepared for this throughout my entire life. I even saw my life in symbolic form as stages of preparation – it appeared in dreams like a series of episodes. When the dreams themselves began, I had been praying earnestly, not because I was into religious rites. Nor did I have a diligent life of devotion in the religious sense. Actually, I was dealing with suppressed anger about the passage in John 14:23, where Jesus was dining with His friends just before His crucifixion. He said to them,

“‘If anyone loves Me, he will follow My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our dwelling with him.’”

Although I could read it there in black and white, I was disappointed because I felt it was not a 24/7 reality for me. I had been a Bible teacher for years, but my institutional church experiences were often a great disappointment to me because I knew there was a gigantic disconnect between what I read in the New Testament and what I had experienced in multiple denominations on Sunday mornings. So, when I prayed about the matter, I prayed in earnest. Surely, this God who had already answered so many prayers for me would help me work through this issue. Either God dwells inside each human heart as a reality, or it is just a nice platitude and churchianity veiled behind a frocked cleric is as near as you can get to the Divine.  It was when my prayer became earnest that a specific dream began to visit me nightly.

At first I didn’t connect my prayer with any dream. Why would I? Dreams tend to perplex us and then vanish when our busy daily activities take over our lives. It would take repeated dreams for me to realise God was speaking to me. Just to me. It was to become personal. Amazingly God deigns to take up His throne in the heart of humans. We are to be His Holy temple! The temple of the Old Testament was only a symbol of this amazing spiritual truth to come with Jesus Christ.

We are not a building made with hands.

Not a physical building since the resurrection. Not a set of rules; but an intimate relationship.

It is not just a fanciful idea. He wants it to be a reality. He longs to dwell with us! Everyone! But this was 2016 when I had the first repeated dream. At the time I still held a dispensationalist / charismatic kind of view along with much of my former reformed theology from years in reformed churches. I had also been trained as a Pentecostal minister, and studied at a variety of seminary / colleges. None of these had given me the “breakthrough” into my spiritual or physical healing. Something was missing and I knew it wasn’t a trifle. I had no idea that my theology, despite qualifications, was a result of inherited centuries of ethical biblical and error.

The error is not really anyone’s deliberate “fault” most of the time. It’s more a “default” that people are born into. That’s because we think behaving ethically in our own strength, doing good as well as religious observance will please God. But it doesn’t. We just don’t get it. I thought I was saved by faith. But I had added churchianity into it. It was binding and blinding. It was a form of humanism, aka, legalism. I couldn’t understand what my blockage was and my prayers were getting insistent about it. I wouldn’t have admitted it at the time, but I was like a child with a parent using a demanding voice, “Please tell me!”

I didn’t take much notice of the first dream. I could see there were symbols, but they gave me no practical meaning. In the dream, there was a young woman who appeared in a lovely bright clean green uniform. It was a vivid green as if from a healthy garden. It was clean, neat and ironed. She would do everything just right with success. That, I found very annoying.[1] Dreams are commonly set with the key meanings in symbols as I have said and the green was so very vivid that I knew it meant something. I had taught literature for years and metaphor was not new to me.

When weird things happen in dreams, they can make one wonder if they are the result of too much pepperoni in the pizza the night before. But if we look at apocalyptic literature, as I have said, we can learn about this powerful means of expression that God often uses to communicate with His kids. I was yet to learn much of this. He uses exaggeration to make a point as hyperbole; also because the Holy Spirit has a sense of humour to share in relationship with us. And God has promised that He will communicate with His children in this way. It’s in Acts 2:17 quoting and verifying the promise in Joel 2:28.

Dreaming about a spotlessly clean person is a divine truth being conveyed – it often speaks of the regenerated spirit within a believer, even if their soul (mind, will and emotions) are struggling. The self often is presented as two or three separate entities. In this way, the Holy Spirit is showing us our true leader should be the new spirit within, and that is what should lead the “learner” soul or mind out of strife (see 2 Corinthians 5:16-21). See note at end.

At this beginning time and with the first set of dreams, the wretched “success” woman kept appearing night after night in the same dream pattern of my frustration. She was successful and I couldn’t get on at all. I was getting annoyed with her and her spotless outfit. What did green mean anyway? I knew the whole dream was full of symbols, but was it green for “Go”? If that was the interpretation I could plainly see I wasn’t allowed to move past “Go” myself and had been confined. Was I in spiritual “jail” and banned from collecting $200? This woman had the Monopoly.[2]

More desperate prayers ensued. They went something like this, “Please, please ….oh please explain this dream!” The next night I dreamt again as per usual and the same character came along and I (or, that is, my dream “self”) received a CD. (Back in 2016 we still used to access material via CD on our lap tops). As my dream-self inserted the CD, the door opened up to a vehicle and I was able, like the girl in green, to finally “Go” where I apparently needed to be. I went where she had gone – travelling. The dream left me travelling on a boat rather like a Sydney ferry. And I was aware of a group of school students lined up for class waiting to enter. Then the dream ended.

Shortly after that dream, a Christian neighbour gave me a CD to listen to. That was when I realised the dreams were in answer to my prayer. I duly listened to it hoping this may be key to John 14:23. Certainly, this CD spoke about expecting to hear from the Lord individually, personally and repeatedly. The key for me though, was that the speaker mentioned a minister online who had been led by the Lord into a ministry of helping people with biblical dreams. My ears pricked up and I listened most intently then. But I was very disappointed when I did an online search for his name to find he had passed away in the previous year. Nevertheless, his website had study material available and I searched these out. I felt I had at last found the “go” of my dream when the dreams about this topic ceased.

Then other dreams took their place. Now the dreams took on clear biblical names, characters and bible references. I had experienced a repeated dream before, but that was at the age of 27 – forty years beforehand. At the time I had taken it to my pastor who said it probably was the Lord speaking. In that original dream I had to climb a mountain. As I did so, I felt the closeness of an encouraging companion who was always by my side, but I didn’t see His face. After many struggles I got to the top of the mountain and discovered a celebratory party. End of dream. Once I talked the dream over with my pastor, the dream ceased to visit me. I had no idea of it being personally predictive as I had not yet had any experience with the charismata. And my church experience wasn’t extensive at that time. If I dreamt again over the next forty years, I didn’t recall the dreams as my life as a teacher meant being shocked awake daily by an alarm clock. The dreams of busy people can quickly recede into the valley of forgetfulness. They seemed unimportant as the busyness of life took centre stage.

But now, in retirement, and with the intense prayer,  dreams became regular. The notions within the dreams, the emotions and vivid colours and conversations were so real, that I was waking up after each dream to write them down. I felt the Lord was going to answer my prayer about my relationship with Him – and what was missing.

We are meant to teach about divine dreaming and visions, like any other gift. The Bible is one third dreams and the consequences of those dreams and visions. They thread their way through its pages until they explode into vivid apocalypse in the Book of Revelation. We are meant to teach this night parable / communication Way of the Lord.

I would have liked some local pastoral help with my developing understanding of divine dreams. Yet I thought that if I asked church leaders about this phenomenon, they may think me strange, or irregular.  And they did.

Since there was no help forthcoming from the church where I held a small women’s leadership position, it became difficult to get advice as to what was happening to me. However, having studied theology for years, I recognized the continually presented Bible types, names and situations in the dreams. I knew this was God. I knew it was the Holy Spirit, since even when the dreams brought personal correction, it was done with such kind gentleness, that I knew it couldn’t be from the evil one. And that the correction was about personal ills that I had never been either able to overcome or to understand – and some I hadn’t yet recognised – it also meant that Someone who knew me intimately was bringing me into more of the light of Christ.

As I was now approaching the dreams seriously, attending to the inherent Bible passages and applying myself to the study of dreams in the Bible, I began to understand the particular way the Holy Spirit can use dreams to guide one. I learnt that they are symbolic because the interpretation of dreams and parables is only given when one is diligent in seeking the Lord. He says this as God is no casual lover and responds to humility and our response to Him in turn.    Matthew 13:10-15. But anyone is welcome to press in and seek more of the Lord.

Green is also the colour of grass which has been subject to light. Grass in dreams represents people. In particular, the colour green, when pure as it was in this dream, speaks of the pure and spotless Bride of Christ. In the Old Testament this was remnant Israel, awaitng Jesus. Now it is the spirit recreated within someone who desperately wants to be God’s child and has been regenerated by faith in Him. Their outer person or soul and thinking is not yet perfect, but their inner person or spirit is born again renewed as always perfect. ( In the New Testament this is the faithful disciples.) It is the photosynthesis colour compared by the prophets with dead trees and leaves / deserts etc., Jeremiah 11:16 “ The Lord named you
‘A green olive tree, beautiful in fruit and form’;”
